Hello creative and courageous mn campers, whose thoughts turn now to roaming wide, and pitching midst nature's broad abundance ...

Could anyone recommend a campsite in St Ives area of Cornwall?

The dc are really, really excited about this camping trip. I have no idea why, but for some reason, Cornwall has them thrilled in a way previous trips to Wales, Norfolk, Sussex and ... Tunbridge Wells never have.

So dh and I are feeling a weight of responsibility. It suddenly occurred to me that I could call in the mn wisdom-reserves. So ... please help ... .

Gwithian Farm is great - child friendly and short walk to the beach. There's a play area, you can get cream teas on site and there's a quiet pub across the road. The beach is great. Would really recommend it

Thank you, allnew.

Will go and google. Child-friendly v. important. That sounds great.

I think Gwithians is fully booked now.

We've stayed at Trevalgen which is outside of St Ives,Ayr is their sister site actually in St Ives. Trevalgen was nice on a farm, entertainment free.

I'd think Ayr would be full but try Trevalgen, failing that you'll just have to Google and get ringing.

Polmanter polmater.co.uk is great- theres a bus to St Ives centre (which was free when I went last June but I think they charge for it in high season) swimming pool and massive pitches!!

St Ives campsites can be much more expensive than the norm- Trevedra Farm in Sennen, nr Lands End is lovely if you wanted somewhere cheaper but further out.

We've booked Lower Treave near Sennen which looks nice.

I've booked Little Trevarrack on the recommendations of mumsnetters. Looks great!

Ooh!! Thank you for the recommendations!! - Sorry about the over-excited punctuation, but I am getting a bit cheerful at the thought of holidays coming.

OK. So. Though i hate to drag my marriage into a discussion of campsites, I fear I must ... . Dh is a little, some might say, enigmatic at times. The uncharitable might use some analogy involving Eeyore. Though not myself, of course.

Anyway, it now appears he has been harbouring both a wish-list and thoughts of a wider circle in which to hunt for his heart's desire. Hmmm. I feel it wouldn't have necessarily been a bad thing to have told me this earlier ... but whatever.

So ... could anybody add to the above list (which we are googling frantically,)

A campsite in the Penwith peninsula, commutable to St Ives -ish, with ...

  • ability to build campfires
  • walkable to beach
  • tents and camper-vans only?

any or all of those.

Feel I've been a bit mean to dh now. Perhaps enigmatic Eeyore is a bit harsh ... .

Anyway, thank you v. much so far, oh wise mn-ers. Are you going to St Ives, too, MilaMae and HocusPontas?

We've also booked Gwithians 4 weeks later so no as we'll do St Ives then.

Think Lower Treave doesn't match any of your criteria so scratch that one off.

You need the Cool Camping England and Cool Camping Kids books, they have quite a few that match your criteria eg Treen and Noongallis but don't think either are near St Ives.

Just flicked through there is Westerly at Balnoon that seem to tick your boxes.

animula · 08/06/2010 23:02

Thank you, MilaMae.

We have been the googling speed-team here, and can say we are very drawn to Noongallis. I have a recorder (!), ds and dh like to sing, and dd, it transpires, has been saying she wants to take her guitar on holiday (!!). Which she can't, actually, play, but, you know, she's attached to it ... so that musical barn sounds v. v. fortuitous.

Thank you all very, very much!

We're going to St Ives Bay in the last week of June woo hoo! Can't wait! It's quite a large site so not everyone's cup of tea but beautiful beach at the end of the site and an indoor swimming pool if the weather is pants.
