Semi wild camping in England - any suggestions?

After a fantastic night camping on our own field at the other side of the woods last weekend, I'm in search of places to do the same kind of thing again.

Scotland too far, and I'm looking for places where we can do this legally in England (can't really hide my bell tent, so don't want to camp without permission).

Tall order, I know, but if anyone has any experience of something similar, I'd be ever so grateful.

I also loved Blackberry Wood for the same kind of privacy, but that's obviously fully booked for summer weekends this year.

I don't think it's "legal" anywhere in England but it's generally OK on open moorland and away from roads. As long as you don't cause a distrurbance and make a mess.

We have often done it on the top of the Lake District fells but just for one night.

It's legal on Dartmoor, for 2 nights at a time, it's the only place in England where you can just pitch where you like. we went last weekend and are going again this coming weekend.

Great, thanks.

Cumbria, thanks for Lake District tip. We probably won't do it for one night only as I'm too lazy to repitch etc, but would keep in mind if we ever travel around with camper van - something we consider doing for a week or so later in the year or next year.

Dartmoor might be an option if we're around that area.

I wish more farmers would allow people to book space for just one tent etc in a field. I love the outdoors, but not so keen on being too close to other tents.

Ooo Fennel where did you go???

Dp and I were talking about this only today, did you go away from the tourist areas?

It's never been touristy when we've been to these places but I don't know if it might be sometimes. Am a bit reluctant to post my secret camping idylls but they aren't that hidden, one is near Okehampton and one near Lydford.

There are loads of sheltered little valleys with streams and woods though, Dartmoor is very cosy like that (compared to Scotland or Cumbria, where we used to camp wild a lot).

Fennel, that sounds wonderful!
