Okay this is EXTREMELY dim but how in the name of all that is good do you tighten sodding guy ropes??

I have a brand new tent. The guy ropes have those little bracket things on them. When I pull them up from the peg in the ground, they slacken off. I know I'm being stupid but I've always gone camping with other people, never owned a tent before and next weekend we are going away with a load of friends and I don't want them to laugh at me! Is there an online tutorial or something?

Yours dimly,

LadyB

You pull them in the opposite direction to the one that slackens them.

I have a rope. It goes and out of the toggle thing three times. Whichever way I pull it, I can't make it act as a tightening device which is its purpose (I assume). I resorted to tying knots in ropes today but I knot that's not the Right Thing To Do

don't you just move the toggle up and down the rop accordingly?

Does this help? explains all parts of tents and diagram shows guy adjusted by pulling down rope between the 2 eyelets of the clip.

BTW if your ropes are syntehtic there is no need to slacken in damp/evening as this only applies to stop shrinkage in natural fibre ropes

You've probably not pulled the rope through the toggle - get hold of one of the loops in the toggle and pull it out to make that into the guy rope bit. You shopuld then be able to tighten it.

ok I know exactly what I mean - just can't explain it!

I think you're right lucy. I am going to try tonight on the tarp as that's relatively easy to get a rope out and practice on. Will report back
