A group of us (with children aged between 5 - 9) are looking to meet up in the New Forest on late May Day bank holiday weekend. Can anyone suggest a campsite fairly wild in the depths of the forest please?

Thanks

Have a look at the Forest Holidays website, they have the best location New Forest campsites.

Roundhill is good for lots of wild areas to camp in - it's very large with lots of trees, forresty bits and gorse bushes. Has discreet amenity blocks dotted around but is in the wilds

I've heard scary stories about fierce and cheeky ponies at the New Forest campsites. Which one is best to avoid getting your 3 year old bitten by a pony?

Another vote for Forest Holidays - sites are large, but great facilities and you can pitch wherever you like on the site.

heard good things about sandyballs

Sandy Balls is fab, but not very wild. The Forestry Holiday ones are fab, but don't have electric hookups. Holmsley is good for families, lots of space for kids to play.

If you're worried about pony bites (never had a problem myself!) then there are a lot near to/on the outskirts of the forest. Meadow View at Horton is nice and not too busy, but is about a 15 minute drive from the forest, so maybe not what you're looking for.

tourists regularly get bitten - they stroke the ponies and wave food at them and forget that they are wild animals. if you use common sense you should be fine - we often picnic in the forest and have never had a problem

Thanks all - we went with your advice and have booked into Holmsley. Looking forward to it loads ....
