Why is the Montana 6 so expensive?

Hi - I'm after some tent advice. I'm looking for a tent for 2 adults and 3 kids (currently all under 4). My criteria are that sleeping compartments need to be together and the living area needs to be a decent size for those rainy afternoons and to accommodate a cooker. The tent will be used a couple of times a year - in peak season - for a minimum of a week at a time.

So, after hours of internet research, I've come across the Corado, Sun Valley and a few others. Most 6-berth seem to be around the £200 - 300 mark but why £400+ for the Montana? I want to buy a good brand that will last but can't see anything that justifies the price difference. Can I tap into your expertise and ask for experiences of the Montana - or any other tent that may fit the bill?

Thanks in advance.

dunno about the montana, but my sis has the sun valley 8 and its ab fab. Room for a party in the living, and a spare room for the porta loo/clothes/junk etc
its so good we are hoping to buy one too (finance allowing)

You have to look at how solid the tent is. The Montana 6 has solid metal poles - they don't bend in the wind and rarely get into problems. A lot of big tunnel tents have fibreglass poles that just don't have the same storm resistance even with a lot of guy ropes.

That's my guess anyway.

I have the Sunvalley 6 and it is fantastic. Not sure it is still in production though

There is a Montana 6 for sale on ebay if you would consider second-hand?

Montana 6 really is a great tent-loads of head height and loads of room. I got mine in a sale for just under £300. Would really reccommend it.

We bought the Montana 6 last yr and like gibba, we paid a little under £300 for it.

We've only had one trip in it and that was in extremely wet and windy Wales. There were collapsed tents all around us and ours stood as steady as a house!

Friends of ours have the Corado but wish they'd have gotten a Montana too.

We love it.

Hi - thanks for all your replies. I take the point about the steel poles. The Montana 6's on ebay were going like hot cakes which kind of prompted my original post. I plumped for the Vango Amazon in the end - I read some good reviews and it has the steel poles. Here's hoping for the good weather that means we won't need them!
