Just bought a caravan - what about insurance?

Hi. I have just driven slowly home with my newly acquired 1973 Sprite and am wondering whether I have to/should insure it. Does it affect my car insurance? How long will it last if I drive very carefully and avoid potholes?

Hi

You will have to insure your caravan to use it on the road.
There are plenty of companies offering caravan insurance and you can probably get a quote online.

if you join the camping and caravaning club you might find some deals

Definitely insure it.

We put our caravan into storage one winter and came back to find that the local 'youth' had been using it as a shag-pad. It was full of fag ends, beer cans, condoms and goodness knows what else....

The insurance coughed up the cost of fixing it then we switched to camping after that as we could keep the tent in the shed

We have had a caravan for nearly 15 years and have never had insurance we've just not round to it we are getting a new one next month and getting that insured however it also depends where your storing it we have our present one is on a car-park and no insurance will touch it the new one is going into storage will feel much better then, you dont need insurance for using it on the road a good website for caravanning is ukcampsites.

It should only cost £50-70. Definately get some.

I have a dodgy old lady - 1989 Swift Challenger. we haven't insured it - i never saw the point. I'm hoping she'll last another yr or two. Hard to say how long a 'van will last - it mostly depends on damp and how springy the floor is.

Hmm, some varying opinions. I was wondering whether insurance was legally necessary for going on the road. The caravan itself is safe enough in our frontyard when not on the road. Will go and bounce on the floor.

Caravan insurance isn't a legal requirement to tow it on the road
