here

I need a new tent, just for me and 5 yr old DS for 2 night campouts, must be fairly light and easy to put up. What do you think can you see anything glaringly obvious wrong with it that I might have missed?

DS likes it because "it is blue and a wigwam".

I quite like this one too

the second one is better because it has a porch. i wouldn't even consider the first one everything would get soaked the minute you opened the door in the rain.

have you had a look at pop up style tents?

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 25/02/2010 12:14

wot Bariatric said

BariatricObama · 25/02/2010 12:16

this is small but the handiness of the pop up would be nice

I think I could get away with linking to the new Outwell pop up video one more time

Please note: Tent does not come with canoe or orange lady in white dress

aSilverLining · 25/02/2010 12:23

Thanks! Yes I was thinking porch would be better, didnt even think of the rain when opening zip - eek. Size and weight of tent are factors I am looking at too.

Pop up tents - are they easy to pop down that is my concern about them... Do any of you have a pop up can tell me about using one?

what Bariatric and Riven said.

wigwam tents are a nigthmare

tunnel type tents are good - easy to put up and loads more room inside as you don't sacrafice space for the dome shape.

(will attempt to find a link)

Lemonmeringue · 25/02/2010 12:23

And the sloping sides of the teepee will mean that it's very much a tent for sleeping in - it'd be difficult to sit up in if it was raining and you were trying not to touch the walls. Definitely more of a festival tent, where somewhere to crash is all that's required.

I'd love a pop-up tent, but they're pricey (or were when I last looked, longingly).

Not that it's going to rain on you, obviously. Enjoy your camping.

BariatricObama · 25/02/2010 12:24

snort@slubbers inability to let go of the outwell video

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 25/02/2010 12:25

how about something like this ?

BariatricObama · 25/02/2010 12:26

i think you need to go 3 berth to have any comfort at all

aSilverLining · 25/02/2010 12:27

That outwell video is hilarious! Arf at camping barbie. It is like the start of a dodgy porno, I expected them to get down to it ouside of their pop up tents and folding bbq.

OP posts:
BariatricObama · 25/02/2010 12:30

yes the tent isn't the only 'pop up' featuring on that trip

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 25/02/2010 12:31

I have a pop up! I have a pop up!

In fact I have the 3 man version of the outwell that Bariatric linked to.

It's quite light, but it's big, Flat (obviously) but a big round flat pancake of a thing which is surprisingly annoying to pack (unless you have a estate).

Pitching is just like the orange lady in the video (but only wankers fling them up in the air like they are releasing doves at a peace convention).

Putting down also easy with practice. I advise private folding sessions to avoid dismay and embarrassment at the campsite.

aSilverLining · 25/02/2010 12:31

I am not fussed over tippee type tents, that one simply caught DS's eye.

Ona serious note about the video though, the pop up tunnel does look easy. Hmmm...

I may drag DS to the camping shop after school to go drool over tents in RL.

rofl @ doves

bouncingblueberries · 25/02/2010 12:33

OMG that video is camping porn! Wish I looked like that when putting up a tent

aSilverLining · 25/02/2010 12:36

SO the 2 I was looking at are no longer contenders. I do want 3 man, 3000 HH, possibly with porch, possibly pop up.

Space and comfort not overly fussed TBH, we will only be camping 2 nights and campsite tent are more a base to explore surrounding area from. I am hoping we get back to tent at end of each day happy and exhausted.

Would definately be practicing new tent at home to spare embarassing myself. Am a seasoned camper but never been with no other adults.

We have this one www.outdoorworlddirect.co.uk/acatalog/Vango_Banshee_300.html and it is fab. Dp dd and I did a weeks camping in it 2 years ago in gales and torrential rain and it was fantastic, warm and dry. Easy to put up and take down single handed too as have done it by myself.

ebayaddict · 04/03/2010 18:13

I'm looking at this one at the moment

here

sewn in ground sheet, 4000hh and an extra bedroom to put stuff in. The only thing lacking is head height.

If I can nag DH to spend a bit more I'm looking at this.

Trouble is that we bought the huge Outwell Florida 6 last year which is great for a week away but too big to put up for a 2 night weekend trip. The Minnis and the Boston I should be able to put up on my own. Then I can take dc's when he is working at weekends.

I have the Vango Alpha 300 and it's a nice little tent They also do the Alpha 300 +, it has a little bit more storage and a tiny porch. Means you're less likely to get rain in the front bit when you open the doors.

I also have a Vango Beta 450, I use it for short camps with my 2 boys. The advantage over the Alpha's is that there's more storage and a place you can sit that's not in the sleeping area.

Both tents are very easy to put up. You can also buy the Vango Adventure Tarp (fits the smaller vango tents). Gives you a porch if it's raining At least you can poke your head out and put the kettle on.
