Camping this time of year , yes / no ?

Just back from a weekend in a caravan.
Was admiring the bravery of the 3 tents pitched there , by the sea on the east coast!
But glad to have the comforts of heating etc in the caravan.
Although the weather was much better than our last camping trip at the end of August!!!!

Been to Devon this HT and saw lots of hardy campers, but I have to say it was glorious weather and quite warm too.

We did not camp, we stayed in hotel which was a real treat, because people made us meals, then took the plates away and washed them up for us!! Lovely.

FantasticMissFox · 27/10/2009 20:50

I went to North Devon last weekend in a tent and all was well temperature wise (didn't even need socks on!) Not so good weather wise (rainy and windy). Hopefully off to Swanage this weekend.

The good thing about going this time of year is that the sea is still reasonably warm!

Well due to this mild weather I have decided to brave it and DS and I are going camping tomorrow till sunday.

We are very excited, DS is mostly excited about the four trains we have to take to get to our destination!

We have an escape plan though, if it is too cold we will go to friends instead

overmydeadbody · 27/10/2009 21:07

Fantastic I an so I love love love Swanage. One of my favourite places in England in fact. That area of coastline has the best climbing.

Lilyloooohhhh · 27/10/2009 21:08

ooh just about to come back to this and thought overmy will camp this time of year
It is very mild though....

Because I help run the DofE award at the school I teach at, there's a little voice in my head telling me 'Expedition season: April to October' so I subconsciously firmly believe that it is against some unwritten law to camp outside this period

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2009 21:12

The only problem is that night time lasts an awfully long time at this time of year.

overmydeadbody · 27/10/2009 21:30

lol Lily

Trust me, we are only going because it is sooooo mild and we have an easy escape plan.

This time last year all the camping gear was sorted and packed away and no way in hell would I have considered getting it out.

overmydeadbody · 27/10/2009 21:32

yes too true badkitten. I am taking my laptop (I know I know not minimalist but sod it) and we are going to the cinema in the local town one eve and to a restaurant another eve.

Lilyloooohhhh · 27/10/2009 21:34

OMG! i couldnt this time of year, i was frozen in june/july time

snorkie · 28/10/2009 22:28

Ds did 4 nights in peak district last week for DoE expo. I thought it was mad, but he had a great time. I think it's been mild for the time of year just lately though.

shockers · 28/10/2009 22:36

I find hats and scarves in bed help... it's that damp coldness at night that gets you.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/10/2009 19:46

Aboard - have you seen the forecast! You may want some really really good pegs. And perhaps a boat.

AboardtheAxiom · 30/10/2009 07:46

I know

If it were up to me (yeah right!) we wouldn't be going!. It will be packing tent in rain on sunday that I'm dreading! Will be a big group of us though with our individual family tents, and a party marquee so lots of shelter.

Urg.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/10/2009 08:04

I'm actually quite serious about the wind. The models are all over the place but it could get pretty nasty. discussion here When are you off? I'll try and give you a final update on that thread if you like (can't make any promises, got a dd to pack off to brownie camp - thankfully indoors)

In your situation (cos I quite like exciting stuff) I wouldn't be cancelling yet, but I would be paying close attention to the forecast. Perhaps have a 'pack up in panic' plan if you do go and pop anything you can in the car sat night just in case?
