This place here, Pencelli Castle in Brecon.

God, it was nice. The loo block was so pristine I actually missed it when we came home.

Huge spacious pitches (well you pitch where you like, but they don't cram it full so there's no overcrowding)

Glorious countryside, but they've also got pots of flowers and plants all over the place.

The whole site was full of thoughtful little touches and wasn't at all money-grabbing. You know, some sites have decent stuff but then charge you have a shower and freeze your ice blocks etc? Not here!

For instance; there are six big fridge freezers in the drying room that you just pop your ice blocks / wine / milk etc in iside a plastic bag with your name on it. What a luxury to have free access to a fridge!

Huge family rooms with baby changing unit, a secture chair to strap a toddler into when you're showering, tons of hooks for all the towels and washbags (some at toddler height)...

Free hairdriers in the shower areas!

Lovely little childrens play area with lots of open space for them to run about in and a little wendy house and lovely swing sets...

Go, people, I urge you! The website totally doesn't do it justice.

Oh no! I am going to a site up the road on Friday, was a toss up between the two. Now wish I'd picked Pencelli!
Great to have a recommendation for the future tho, thanks.

Thanks for sharing.
Will definitely check it out

Pencelli is just 15 mins up the road from me and is lovely too near for us to camp tho lol. Reccommend walking to Talybont along the canal (which if I recall goes alongside the campsite) and having a lovely pint in the Star.

welshdeb · 19/08/2009 17:09

Do they still have the reindeer in the field next door?

TheDMHatesMe · 19/08/2009 17:14

LOL at "The loo block was so pristine I actually missed it when we came home."

Agree it is lovely.

littlemisschatalot · 19/08/2009 21:35

not a number we were there last week 2! agree its totally fab. i loved it. best thing for me was the lack of tat toys in the shop. not one in sight. usually we get pestered for water pistols/slime/bouncy balls/frisbees/grow an alien thingy etc but not here. shop actually stocked what you needed.
agree it was wonderful.

littlemisschatalot · 19/08/2009 21:56

also liked the high number of french/german/dutch on the site. gave it a different feel. the only negative i felt was the access onto the canal in the tent field. it wasnt fenced off, so as the week went on, my kids boundries grew, and they discovered this.

PitysSake · 19/08/2009 21:57

ha

our school went to field trips there at some kind of hostel

serinBrightside · 22/08/2009 18:34

Very nice, but at £42 per night for my family I would blooming well expect it to be!

faraday · 31/08/2009 21:06

We went to Pencelli circa 1979 (lower sixth) staying at an Outdoors Centre (poss run by Wilts Ed Auth?) as part of my Geog A level!

I recall schlepping up a mountain in BORROWED hiking boots (blisters central) and with NO water bottles, I recall bothering the natives of a local town about the pattern of tourism and I clearly remember the Porth yr Ogof caves where we went potholing!

I also recall driving along valleys wondering how on EARTH a teenager in those lonesome, isolated farms could POSSIBLY survive!

Fond memories.

We couldn't get in there for this weekend but it's on ur list of places to visit!#

It was in The Times top 10 camp sites iirc

kiwibella · 28/12/2009 10:27

oh god... I have just booked here for the summer. I can't wait - already!

Please give me ideas of what you all did over the week... particularly if it was wet? I'm concerned about the four of us in our wee tent if we don't get glorious sunshine.

Am I going to wish that I had booked a beach holiday?
