Why did no one tell me camping was so noisy?

First trip. Don't mind people talking but loud music, dropping bottles in to bins etc and road noise.
Just not used to any of that really and its putting me off.

Where can I go in the South East that is not near noisy roads and is known for being quiet?

Off to Wowo for the August bank holiday.

We went to a lovely site in the lake district which was pretty quiet - until two families turned up at 10 pm and put up their tents. Headlights on, engines on to blow up air beds etc... Think you have to take a relaxed attitude and a laissez faire attitude

Went to wowo earlier in the summer. It was lovely mid week but quite noisy at the weekend. It may have just been our bad luck in terms of our neighbours.

A group of about 6 tents pitched next to us with just dads & kids (no mums at all). They were beery late into the evening and then the kids were out and shreiking on the rope swings at 6.30am while they dads all stayed in bed

There were lots of groups of over 4 tents who naturally tend to sit up later and talk than the small groups or individual famillies.

when i went camping, the tent that was at least 15 metres away from me had someone snoring in it all night every night!!! that was enough noise for me

We just had a noisyish weekend at Wowo too, aggravating as I imagined it as quiet. Do campfire sites (which I love) make it worse or does everyone think it's ok to sit up being loud past 11? I always have to go to bed at 9 and get up at 5 as that's what ds does!
I'm sure blackberry wood is great but it's not much use recommending it to anyone since it is booked through til this time next year.

well yes you do have to go midweek or get in early.

We went Sunday-Monday and only had to book 6 weeks in advance.

Really I should be telling you all how crap it is so you don't add to the waiting list.

Cockles, which field were you in? We were in Lower Moat (the furthest from toilet block/reception) and found it really quiet.

Ah, we were in upper brook, is that the one I mean? It was just bad luck I think, some Young Childless People turned up late and camped too close to us - mostly there is lots of space - and they just talked really loud & boringly until 1 am every night. And the only music we could hear on 'music night' was tuneless group singalongs of oasis. I am being unreasonable I think! It was lovely otherwise though.

Am going to Stubcroft at bank hol, though, so really hoping the two reviews on ukcampsite that say it was full & rowdy are - um - lying? someone reassure me.

MollieO - also just been camping for the first time this weekend, so had no idea of what to expect. Was pleasantly surprised though - we went to Washington Camping & Caravan Site (more tents than caravans though!) and it was lovely. You don't need to book, just get there early enough to get a good pitch. No noise between 11.30 pm and 7am. It would have been perfect if dd2s airbed hadn't deflated - we put dd2 in dd3's bed and took her in with us. Bad idea! That's what kept me awake, although I did hear some snoring, it wasn't that bad! Don't give up on your first trip - I'm sure you'll have a better experience next time! Am off to buy another airbed for our next camping trip in a couple of weeks

We are planning camping trip two for this Thursday. Was planning on Burnbake but reviews aren't that good. I will be scouring UK Campsite for quiet places to go!
