We are planning on going here in a few weeks. UKcampsite reviews look great, but would be greatful for any other advice/opinions.

Thanks.

When are you going? We are going in August, 22 and 23. Might see you there!!

LilRedWG · 13/07/2009 20:48

Second week in August, so will be the week before you go. Have you been before?

It's a fab site! Reminded me of when I used to camp as a child. All the tents around the outside and the children playing and riding their bikes in the middle.

Toilets/showers are very basic and DH won't go back until there are more but I didn't mind too much.

We hired a fire pit and sat around it most evenings, drinking wine and watching the stars - a wonderful tranquil place.

Im off there for the bank holiday weekend!

cant wait

nannyL · 01/09/2009 22:43

definitley need more loo's

2 flushing uni sex toilets to share between over 50 mostly extra large tents is not enough, especially when 1 was almost always blocked.

the showers were ok if you were the only person having a shower. otherwise hot / freezing. also no where to change before / after shower except in the middle of the porta cabin which would be ok except for the fact that when the door is open anyone walking past can see right in and watch!

Otherwise one of the nicest most idealic basic campsites i have ever stayed on with the nicest campsite owners in the world (IMO).
they also do farm shop delivery straigh to your tent which is great, and the honestly shop and communal fridge freezer are an excellent idea too.
Lovely to have all the animals around to stroke and feed.

despite unpleasant loo's i WILL go back! cause everything else more than makes up for it!

MollieO · 01/09/2009 23:20

I was planning to go here this coming weekend but you've put me off nannyL!

nannyL · 02/09/2009 19:14

i still think you should go.

it is the lovliest site ever.... bring a swim suit for use in the shower, and shower mid afternoon (like i did ) and a peg for your nose?

I have literlly just returned and am only being honest!

MollieO · 02/09/2009 19:51

No problem nannyL I appreciate your honesty . We will try it next year but have decided to go to Hollands Wood in the New Forest for our next trip. Ds is spectacularly difficult when it comes to using smelly toilets but hopefully that will change as he gets a bit older.

Sorry, I do NOT recommend this site...yet.
Lovely big open space and owners were really nice, but nothing made up for the loo/shower situation. We are pretty seasoned campers and went prepared for a basic site, but even on a basic site, I think the least you can expect is a flushing loo, when you are told there is one! The only 2 flushing loos were blocked the whole time we were there and the compostible toilets really hummed.
The shower situation is diabolical. I went late in the day and had a 10 second blast of luke warm water and then literally a dribble of cold water. The site simply can't cope with any more than a couple of people as it is. We were told that they intend to get a decent toilet block in but until it's there, I really wouldn't go, unless you are only going overnight. Otherwise lack of facilities is depressing.

mousymouse · 31/08/2010 10:49

we just returned from a long weekend on longthorns farm.
the campsite itself is absolutely lovely - well maintained and spaced out enough to be quiet and family friendly.
the showers and the loos were a different story though.
the shower block was always clean but the showers were quite a challenge - either hot or cold never pleasantly warm long enough to be comfy (especially after a cold night). the toilet block had only chemical toilets and were very smelly. the other toilets were composting ones and smelly as well...
bearable for two nights but wouldn*t want to be there any longer than that.

LilRedWG · 24/09/2010 22:19

Depressing that they haven't sorted showers/toilets this year. Maybe next....

they HAVE sorted the toilets this year

there is a completly new block in a different bot of the camp site...

the old loos (and old COLD shower) have been removed and replaced by a hut with books and info about the local area

i have been both this year and last year

i went this easter when the new toilet block was brand New (well 3 weeks old)
they didnt smell at all then, and i thought they used water not chemicals to flush, but possibley grey water. The block itself was a much higher standard than most campsites

Not a fan of the composting toilets either!
