Camping in France - Can we just turn up?

We are goingto France for 2 weeks nect weekend, staying with in-laws first week. We are taking tent etc. Can we just turn up at a campsite the second week or do we need to book in advance?

My french SIL insists it is ok to turn up ....

Whenever we've been camping in France in July it's been ok just to turn up. Not so sure about August (Franch holiday month) but you should be ok in July

great - i was getting worried as we are bringing all our own stuff so don't want to go with a UK co that offer tents/mobile homes etc. We were going to get euros here first and go direct. We are staying near Montpelier first week - can anyone recomend a nice campsite on the beach (Med) around there where we can pitch our tent? Don't mind a drive to it but would like beach and a few facilities.

If you are planning to go to a site near beach then I would at least email them ahead to check that they have room -
