We've got the xxl - bought a couple of years ago so not the latest model - and are very happy with it. We tossed up between the xl and xxl at the time and opted for the xxl because of the extra pod giving us more storage space and the option of sleeping the dc separately and still having a storage pod. Thinking of doing a camping sleepover for ds1's birthday and having all four pods occupied as bedrooms - that'll put it (and us? to the test.

same here, we have the xxl and its great.
we have since bought the front awning for it and this is excellent, gives you and extra room. and i would recommend getting the carpet too

gosh, but isn't it HUGE? do you have trouble getting pitches for it?

never had trouble yet.
campsites usually ask you how big your tent is then site you accordingly .

We had one (XXL) for 3 DC and 2 adults and it was no problem on the pitch front, we just stated it was large or that there were 5 of us and we were sited accordingly. Don't think one really takes up more room than others with it because those with diddy tents tend to have a pop up or two in addition which takes up plenty of pitch space so it's not embarrassing on that front!

I would say the XXL is very generous and the extra 'room'is great but overall it feels very spacious inside and is almost too much space to know what to do with in the central bit.

XL would probably be adequate for most actually.

Are you planning to use in the UK or abroad. We were thinking of buying this tent and some one said it might not fit a french pitch..not sure if this is right? In the end we went for the vango tigris 800 instead (slightly cheaper). The outwell hartford does look a lovely tent though.

PandaG · 07/07/2009 09:32

we have the XXL - 4 years old, and the L - 3 years old. Were initially going to buy the XL but the shop we bought from had the previous year's XXL cheaper than the current XL.

XXL is huge, but means that camping is comfortable not a squash - can sit at least 8 for dinner in the centre if needed.

we use the L for a weekend camp or if just DH and I are away.

re pitch size - yes it is huge, and it does not fit on some pitches, you often have to give your dimensions so you can be pitched accordingly. have occasionally had 3 pitches between 2 large tents in order to fit. Can't comment about French pitches as never been.

We have the XL but ours is one of the older ones and it doesn't have a sewn in ground sheet.

I think the newer ones seem to have some sort of porch as well don't they?

We have only used ours twice

Hi

We have one (the newer one with SIG) me, hubby and 4 kids love it as it is like home from home ;)

Loads of room so you are not falling over eachother would definitely recommend it. Not had any problems getting a pitch in UK

Also thinking of buying Hartford XL tent (2007 model) second hand. We're new to camping - family of four (DS 4 and DD 2). Just a bit concerned that it might be too big for us???!! Only planning on doing long weekends. Wondering how easy it is to pitch and approx how much it will cost to pitch. Any advice gratefully received.

Wilts · 20/07/2009 20:46

There are only four of us as well, but we managed to fill the space.

When Ds2 was in a travel cot both boys had a separate pod, once he was out of it they shared. leaving us a pod free for junk useful items.

It took us about half an hour to put up, but we have only used it twice so no idea if you could do it much faster with practice.

Although it is quite large, on both sites we went to we were charged normal fees.

Mayron · 20/07/2009 21:34

Thanks for that. I was thinking two bedrooms and a pod for storage. Everyone I know who camps, has bought a bigger tent (with sewn in groundsheets!) a year down the line. Think we'll just go for it!
