Roof boxes... who's got one, are they worth having and more to the point... why do they cost more than my whole tent?

roof rails is when a car has them built in along the sides of the roof, front to back. You still have to attach clamps & roofbars but not to teeny-weeny metal bits under sliders above the car doors.

Rails are the permanent bars running the length of the roof on some cars. the roof bars you need run across them width ways to make a square (IYKWIM)! Then your roof box fixes onto the ones that run width ways.

you may not need rails. you can get sort of feet things that you fit to your car. here

Has anyone linked to this jobby yet? It's being advertised on ukcs atm. Looks fancy AND is recommended by the Gadget Show AND the Good Housekeeping Institute (a formidable crossover).

aitch, look at the different fixings on this page.

My car has those Fixpoints. I bought clamps & bars for it from Halfords about 3 years ago & haven't got them out of the packaging yet (in fact I'm not even sure where they are

(Who would have thought there was so much to say about roofboxes )

AitchTwoOh · 03/06/2009 20:35

forget roofboxes, if it's a gadget you're after then i want one of THESE!

we have roof bags from ebay about £30 they are fab very waterproof have done us several wet cornwall camping trips. they do look a bit, well, clampity though but doesnt bother me as they take tons of stuff. stow small and v cheap. need roof bars with them

iheartdusty · 03/06/2009 22:32

can I just point out something about roof boxes fitted to one side not in the middle:

i) if you are a shortarse you may not be able to reach it if it is in the middle, and

ii) it leaves space to fix bikes or a kayak on the roof next to it.
