Important Poll: What is camping to you?

no, it's not really important, I'm just curious, and have a theory. Two questions really:

A) Is camping:

  1. The event, the attraction, the activity and point of the holiday
  1. Just cheap accomodation
  1. A mix of 1 and 2

B) Are you:

  1. Everything but the kitchen sink type camper (a tent with more than one room, table and chairs, awnings, carpet, cooking area, contents of playroom etc etc)
  1. A minimalist camper
  1. Somewhere in between

a) 1
b) 1 - I take a kitchen sink (and a loo, and an oven... folding camper!)

I love camping, but I couldn't do rough-it style camping.

A.3
B.3 Well as much as you can be with double buggies, nappies and 4 kids!

NeedaNewName · 19/05/2009 21:27

A - 1

Love camping but going with a group of people, its then like one long extended bbq with friends.

B - 3 but going closer to 1 if I'm being honest

We have a ridiculously huge tent but it does enale us to have more friends ocming with us, we don;t have table and chairs - thats what a picnic rud is for, carpet I'll admit to but it is so much easier than several rug snad it looks and feesl nice! No cooking area and we feel the idea of campng is to leave the playroom at home though they can take a couiple of things with them.

What about you OMDB?

1 (VW Passatt estate plus a trailer both crammed full!)

MagNacarta · 19/05/2009 21:28

1 and 1

brightwell · 19/05/2009 21:32

3 & 3 for me....the main draw is being away from home and just being...no pc, tv, xbox. Getting up when it's light & going to bed when it gets too cold to sit out.

gigglewitch · 19/05/2009 21:38

3 and 3
two boys and me, 3 man tent, quality time the aim

however I'm also a caravaner

Overmydeadbody · 19/05/2009 21:45

Intersting.

So far my theory is spot on

Ok, my answers now:

A is 2 most of the time, occasionally 3

B is 2 all of the time

I'm a climber, camping is just an easy cheap way of staying near the crags and getting more climbing done. I thought this might be why I'm a minimalist camper and have no interest in all the extra gear like chairs and roll mats and stuff.

I somtimes longingly look at the everything ut the kitchen sink campers on the campsite with but then I open the wine and it doesn't matter that we are roughing it any more

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 19/05/2009 22:23

a- 3. I lie the fact its cheaper than other options but I love been outdoors and the fact that DD as an only child gets to play with other kids. However if its raining I yearn for a cottage with more space.

b - 3. We have a bigish tent. I do take chairs, don't tend to take a table. Certainly no awning or carpet. I do take a stove for cups of tea and the odd cooked breakfast bu tend to eat down the pub most of the time. Don't take many toys - DS, dominoes and a pack of cards.

Goober · 19/05/2009 22:25

Not a camper.

diedandgonetodevon · 19/05/2009 22:32

1 and 1. Go camping for campings sake but with airbeds, duvets and other home comforts. The site must have spotless loos and hot showers!!

tigana · 19/05/2009 22:33

A1

B...DH is 1, I am genetically 2, so collectively we are 3 but veer towards 1 (because, you know, it's nice...and we have a campervan now...so automatically not minimalist )

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/05/2009 23:04

A. 3.

B. 1.

Huge difference between climbers camping and family camping though. Don't know why, but both have different values.

KingCanuteIAm · 19/05/2009 23:06

A. 1

B. 3 (nearer 2)

I now need to know the theory though

gigglewitch · 19/05/2009 23:09

Go on, now I'm curious too
Tell the theory please!!

FlappytheBat · 19/05/2009 23:10

A.1 and B.1, well it is now we have children, gone are the days where it used to be a tiny tent to crash in at the end of a long days walking/climbing!

But at least with family camping, now have a huge coolbox for all our winefood

KingCanuteIAm · 19/05/2009 23:31

So, go on, or have we exploded your theory now? (wouldn't surprise me - bloomin contrary those MNers )

Fennel · 20/05/2009 09:58

We are A1, B2.

We like backpacking best, and even when we go by car we don't take "furniture" - we fill the car up with watersports equipment and bikes.

SammyK · 20/05/2009 11:12

A1 and B3

We have a four man tent with five of us (!), no carpet, table, etc. We tend to go with other friends so we have other adult company and the dcs don't get fed up of each other.

The aim of it for us is to enjoy the outdoors and each others company. Camping is the only holiday I tend to truly relax on.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 20/05/2009 11:19

1 and 1

Love camping and sadly love all the (mostly pointless) gadgets!

Dp even has a special knife for 'whittling'.
