Is camping over bank holiday weekend absolutely grim?

We're debating trying to book somewhere (UK) for camping this weekend, but DP is anxious that it will be overrun with hordes of mad families. I am anxious we won't be able to book anywhere at this late notice

While I realise that bank holiday weekend are always busy, is it just horrendous? We are on south coast (nr brighton) and don't want to go far, so it would be somewhere like the new forest I expect.

It is going to be first camping trip with the baby (now 8 months), so we won't bother going if the weather is appalling...

Most of the New Forest sites are booked well in advance - and are heaving! This weekend is the most popular as first time tent comes out of storeage for many.

However, we have stayed at some sites when they are fully booked but you still have space - mainly those without marked pitches which become rigid rows of campers.

We used to go to Bracelands, Forest of Dean, but it is now too expensive for us.

Read reviews of sites you like on UK Campsite, as they often give an indication of what is was like on capacity weekends.

it will definitely be overrun with hordes of mad families, yes

But brilliant fun too, so go for it.

It does get very busy, this year we're doing a whole week but normally we go on the actual bank holMonday to avoid the main crowd and stay until then Friday.

personally if that's all you're fdoing, just the weekend, i'd wait a week or two and it'll be a much mroe enjoyable experience, esp.with a baby.

Also like braceland / Christchurch BTW, didn't like Homesley but did like Hollands Wood.

We are camping this weekend! Am slightly anxious as we've been about four times already this year and always in lovely quiet campsites, I think it will be a bit of a shock

We were camping in New Forest last weekend. Baby is now 7 mths, so when he started crying in the middle of the night we were quite pleased that the camp site was only half full!

I can recommend a nice site. Have a look at this. It's a smaller site and it's one of our most favourite ones.
