Nice campsites in Dumfries and Galloway?

We're new campers (well new campsite-with -family campers) and have just got back from a week in a cottage in Dumfries and Galloway. It's a lovely area and very easy for us to get to, so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for campsites in this area?

We'd prefer smaller sites, not too much going on, preferably not with loads of static caravans. DP would happily have us all wild camping on top of a mountain, but with a 3yo and a 2yo I'm insisting on at least showers!

its quite big, but lovely. brighousebay on the baech, indoor pool, play area, lots of nice families.

Oh yes, we did a drive-through of that one when we went to Brighouse Bay (isn't it lovely there?) - the lady whose cottage we were on recommended it for swimming and so on. But that's an example of one that is a bit too big for us I think.

I know a lovely one near-ish to Inverness, but I realize that doesn't help!

Loch ken campsite is lovely. mmm maybe not near the water as I've just noticed your little ones.

Hang on let me think

Which part of D&G - the Dumfriesshire part or the Galloway part or does it not matter?

Lucycat · 07/05/2009 13:41

Any of these any good?

We love the area, but don't camp as we have friends who live there (with 25 acres ) make sure you go before the end of Whit week or after the first frost as the midges are a bugger.

Can highly recommend Cream O Galloway as a day out though.

midnightexpress · 07/05/2009 14:21

Oh we did Cream o Galloway, and yes, it was great (the ice cream, obviously..., but the rest too).

Thanks for all the links - will take a closer look when I get a minute. Saltire, we especially liked the bit around Kirkcudbright, so that sort of area, or else inland a bit around the forest park.

I highly recommend this place: www.drumroamin.co.uk/

Great clean hot showers and washing machine, hot water for dishes, dish towels and things supplied but no horrible arcade games or 'entertainment' really just a field (but a nice one )

Oh now that looks like the sort of thing fluffles, though the picture in the pic gallery of the corpse (?) in the trailer is somewhat alarming.
