Mosquito repellent/kit for children camping

Any suggestions for good kit to keep the mosquitoes off the children in a tent? Is a net a good idea, and can you get them for tents?

Also, anyone know of an effective repellent which is ok for children?
I understand there is a problem with Deet, what is it?

AVON Skin So Soft spray is one of the best for deterring midgies. The military buy it in bulk, so I've heard! I'm not 100% on its deterrence of mozzies though

If you keep the tent zipped up as much as possible, the mozzies shouldn't be able to get in in the first place.

Sorry, I haven't heard of Deet.

Hope that helps a little.

Another vote for skin so soft

I buy a bottle of citonella oil (in the essesntial oils sections of Boots, Holland and Barrett etc) and one of those little plastic squirty bottles in the travel bottles section of Boots/Superdrug. Then make up a citronella oil mixture in the squirty bottle to squirt the DCs with. Smells lovely and is completely natural. Works on all insects.

Ok, I've checked out the Skin So Soft, which one is it, the dry oil spray? There are loads of different ones- is it worth having the lot to build up resistance?

Deet is the stuff that's in a lot of insect repellents, I guess it must be a bit controversial as it always says contains DEET in bigger letters!

Annie, what do you mix the citronella with?

We are going to Scotland in midge season, it might be fine, we're on the coast, but I want to be prepared....people keep grimacing when I tell them when we're going there!

Every time I put it in google I get pictures of those hats with the built in mozzi net, it's worrying me!

here

Just be careful if you have sensitive skin though...test it first
It makes ds and i come up in a rash (easily done for us though tbh). Its fine for dd and dh

Yup. The one troutpot said

I used to live near Loch Lomond and found Skin So Soft worked the best. My Mother swears by it too, and she goes travelling all the time now she's retired.

It makes the men smell a bit girly, mind you It's worth getting them to spray it on, just for the laughs!

Keep eyes and mouth closed when spraying your face. It doesn't taste nice

You want Mosiguard. It's the only natural one tested by the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to be as effective as DEET. I've lived in west Africa, where our life really did depend on keeping the mossies off, and it worked brilliantly. It's approved for anyone over 3 months old.

Cocobear · 01/05/2009 21:17

Oh, and the active ingredient in Mosiguard is lemon eucalyptus, so any brand with that as the main ingredient should be fine!

Poppity · 01/05/2009 22:34

Thanks everyone, how weird that Skin So Soft works, can't wait to get that on DH, and the citronella[insert cheeky emoticon] He won't want to leave the tent in case anyone smells him! I'm going to buy all of those, I can't stand the blighters, my insect fighting kit is going to be bigger than the washbag!

I've found the mosiguard in an on line shop called Safari-Quip, makes me feel I'm being a tad overdramatic!

Sounds like it's going to be a fun trip

would 2nd mosigard, react very badly to bites (only backpacker with mosinet when sleeping in a hammock!)and it was the only thing that has worked as well as 100% deet formula which is hideous ...if your bed pods don't have own protection then you may want to try and craft(?) something from a net .....also be v hyper about keeping doors zipped up....and take it out with you as dusk can be feeding frenzy time and its easy to get caught out and about and its not too hand...good luck
