doofus question, but are you allowed to have a campfire?

In the US, at least in the pacific NW where I'm from, you are allowed a campfire in any campsite -- in fact, most pitches are designed around a grate or stone circle.

How does it work here? And if you're not allowed to light a campfire, what do you sit around at night???

are you in the UK now? There are more and more sites that allow you to have camp fires - go onto ukcampsite.co.uk and in the advanced search you can look for sites that allow fires.

Went to one last year near Doddington (Kent), very nice, you could hire fire pits and buy logs, another one called camp wowo in east sussex (I think) you could have the fires on the grass. Cloud Farm on the edge of Exmoor provided stones for you to build your fires in. Can't beat sitting round the fire toasting marshmallows!

you can get a big metal pan to put your fire in, a bit like a giant wok on legs.

anything you can contain the fire in that also protects the grass below it is good.

we use a bucket barbecue.

thanks Tweetlebeetle, that's exactly it! growing up camping it was all about sitting around the fire, making 'smores' (so called because you will want some+more -- toasted marshmellow on digestive with a square fo chocolate, mmmm) and roasting hot dogs, jackets, sweet corn...

I wouldn't know what to do with myself if we went camping without a fire??!!

Fforest Fields in Powys, mid wales allows campfires

Ffor4st fields looks nice, we were cnsidering it but too much water too close atm for us.
