Anyone got any advice on trailer tents

We're having to get rid of our caravan because of space issues but still need a something I can sleep in that's off the floor due to health issues, so looking at trailer tents/folding campers.Anyone got one, is it good, any recommendations/warnings? cheers.

They arn't too difficult to put up, if you can afford the modern ones, no probs, some of the older types take up to an hour to erect, but then by the time you've levelled ya caravan and plugged and plumbed and unpacked it can take just as long! we find taking bare minimum always helps.

Part of the fun of camping is the setting up, get to know the neighbours and pop that bottle of wine on a lovely summers evening! she says in awe, waiting for the summer!

Trailer tents are just glorified tents, you still get all the noises around you that keep you awake at night, whereas the caravan blocks those annoying little noises. But hey a little more wine and you'll not hear a thing.

There is seems more room in a trailer tent

Could you borrow one to try out, there are some good camping shops and caravan shops around where you can get a good look and fiddle around a bit. Or maybe a really cheap second hand one is a good start, you may not like it, after having a caravan, but then you've not spent the earth.

Good luck and have fun looking!

also apologise for my non-sense post

madhairday · 22/02/2009 16:15

Thanks Zip. Yes also thinking wistfully of evening with wine sitting in front of the tent. sigh...
Yes we're looking second hand really - our caravan is ancient and worth very little. So I guess it's just seeing what's out there on ebay etc and hoping.

Is it just two of you or kids too? Folding campers are great, like caravans really but with canvas over the top instead of solid. The inside is much like a caravan though. Trailer tents are really just the two beds plus bench seating and then the awning. If there are just two of you I'd go for a folding camper. They are more expensive (not as expensive as caravans though!) and smaller than trailer tents but they are more luxurious and quicker to erect usually.

My PILs have folding camper for sale at the mo - cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=120380009113 It is really lovely, just a bit small for us unfortunately.

madhairday · 23/02/2009 12:39

Thanks neenz. Looks lovely, bit out of our price range though. We have 2 dcs so looking for one with fair amount of space, looking more at trailer tents now have researched a bit more. Anyone got a Sunncamp 350/400? They look just right for us, wondering if they are any good.

Hi i bought a second hand TT off ebay for £300! We put it up at our local camp site to make sure all the bits were there and if anything needed repairing etc and it was fab. It took us 1.5hrs and that was with 3 dcs with us! didn't peg it out cos we were taking it down the same day and obviously that adds time. But, overall was pleased with the large double beds and tent space. would say deffo needs 2 adults to put up. the model is a sunncamp 350e. And although its old there was nothing wrong with it and its not some moody brown and orange canvas, which I thought was good for the price! worked it out that one weeks holiday in the school holidays would more than pay for itself so if I never use it again and sell it, it would have been worth buying .

madhairday · 24/02/2009 14:34

Thanks milky, that's one of the models I've seen and liked the look of, wow to get one for £300 would be amazing, esp in good condition. Starting to trawl ebay and preloved, but would quite like to see one in the flesh, I guess I need to look up camping shops or something, or shows?

I saw a Sunncamp one at the Outdoors show in Birmingham last week and it looked really good. Even new it was only £2k. Very big too. It is a great budget TT, but I think any preloved one would be a decent buy second hand as long as the canvas etc is in good condition.

Conway, Jamet, Sunncamp, Raclet, Trigano are all good models.

madhairday · 27/02/2009 16:26

Hi neenz, have just posted on your other thread, we went to camperlands today and bought a 5-6 yr old Trigano Cheverney, in pretty good nick with lots of extras like storage box, electrics etc - really chuffed. Hopefully it will go up ok and be in good condition. The size of it seems great - beds bigger than the sunncamp and the canvas seems to be much better quality - at least the camperlands salesman assured us this was so! We pick it up in a couple of weeks

Which salesman was it? We had Mark and he was really nice. No hard sell at all - he didn't need to though to be fair! How much did you pay for the Cheverney?

madhairday · 04/03/2009 12:51

It was John I think, really nice too, also no hard sell.
Paid 1500, seems reasonable? I don't really know about these things, hoping it wasn't a swizz but think I trust camperlands.

I don't know about these things either madhairday, but it looks great on the website. I am sure it was a good price. They had a second hand Chantilly for £3000 and that was a great price for what it was so I am sure you got a good deal.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 04/03/2009 14:20

We had a conway corniche which was fantastic!
