I am thinking of hiring a vw camper for the weekend as a surprise for my dh's birthday in march.
if i did this i would love to keep it all as a surprise and then ask him on the morning where he would like to go.
do you think this is possible? i f we went to the new forest or some where can we just park up by the side of a road?
If we had to go to a campsite would a lot of them be shut in march or could we just turn up and stay?
Any hints gratefully recieved! thank you

You can pitch by the side of the road but in busy areas such as the New Forest you have to be prepared to move on quite early in the day, or you might be asked to move on. We used to camp in the wilds with ours but in more out of the way places in the Lakes and Scotland, not in Hampshire.

I would suggest that in the new forest you look at forest holidays- camper vans OK (can recommend forest of dean also, lovely area) and very cheap
