Following on from a recent thread (which got a bit sidetracked about financial decisions), we have decided to sell our beloved VW T5 to free up some cash.
we will probably get a five person air tent- anyone done this?

Having gone from a tent to a van, I will never, ever, ever camp in a tent again…….

I went from caravan to tent, I love it. I did buy everything I need and a trailer to carry everything. Also bought really good camp beds, I refuse to sleep on the floor!

@Moll2020 yes I’ve got camp beds - we’ve got loads of kit from the van. What do you live about it?

@Theraininspainishere wbat is it about a tent?

@Twoshoesnewshoes everything being damp in the rain, the hassle of putting it up, the lack of flexibility to just up and travel on in the morning within 20 minutes, the lack of opportunity to stop over almost anywhere and travel on the next day - (pub garden, road by beach, next to a farm shop), the way you’re cooked by the sun in the morning, having to cook a meal/boil a kettle in the rain as there’s no safe indoor place, always having to be surrounded by other people on campsites.

But if you’re staying in one spot for a few days or more and happy to stick to campsites, these won’t affect you.

Noo, van life all the way.

I have gone from van to tent and I like it. Tent = closer to nature. I have a reasonable good mat and a down sleeping bag. I like cooking on my Trangia. The simple life!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/05/2026 22:30

Ahh yes that’s a good point - closer to nature!

We have a hike tent and self inflating mats, it’s fine but it’s a bit back to basics, depends on what you want. We go on the motorbike so needs to be compact

There’s nothing good about going from a vw camper to a tent! Sorry!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/05/2026 10:23

😔
im trying camping this coming weekend- borrowed a big tent, we have good campbeds with mattresses, I have earplugs….we will see
i am developing a cunning plan though- might get a base van and convert slowly as and when we have funds…
