Hot tent with wood stove.

I've seen all the Youtubers doing it. I don't mind a bit of cold when out and about, but would like a warm tent in the evenings. I already have a tent with an opening for a chimney so I just need the stove and 2 co2/smoke alarms. (1 is none!)

Any advice? I'm also going to need cookware suitable for a hotplate, and an insulating sleeve thing for the chimney where it goes through the tent. Anything else?

I'm planning mid April, but a test in the garden first might be sensible.

DON'T DO IT!
The risk of getting it all wrong is very high!

We have a canvas Touraeg tent with a hot stove. We use a Winnerwell stove with the flue exit, a water heater, a fold flat oven and a pipe oven. We also have a heatproof mat for under the stove. I use cast iron cookware on the stove and have a couple of kettles so that we always have plenty of hot water for drinks, washing up and washing us. Along with our CO monitors and smoke alarm we also keep a fire blanket a fire extinguisher. Is your tent canvas? Some of the hot tents which arent canvas tend not to use the flue exit. If/when you do get your stove, do an initial burn in the garden as they often have a coating on which smells bad during the first burn and would be unpleasant in your tent.

Need a heatproof mat! You can unzip some groundsheet but I will be murdered by bugs.

It's a polycotton tepee. Been meaning to get a fire extinguisher for the car anyway.

V dangerous.

The tent must be made with fire resistant fabric or treated, you can’t use just any tent

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 14/01/2026 22:13

Have a look at the YouTube channel “Kent Survival” he has lots of videos about hot tents/stoves.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 14/01/2026 22:24

Don’t do it.
Not only is a risk of fire very high- and it will spread very fast above your heads and then collapse on you.
But your air quality inside the tent will be full of particulates which cause cancer and fatal asthma attacks.

He's one of the reasons why I'm planning on doing it! And after his incident with the smoke filled tent he's why I'm planning on 2 smoke/co2 detectors.

The tent is fire resistant and I'll have a tiny knife on hand for quick and easy exit.

Tents are designed for wood stoves. It's not certain death.

If it’s just warmth you want, have you considered a portable diesel heater?

BTW it’s a CO alarm you need, not CO2.

Another vote for Kent Survival.
Also A Bloke in the Woods and Haze 57Outdoors.

Not that I want to go camping myself but they are all informative, and entertaining as well.

FolioQuarto · 21/01/2026 13:49

Haze Outdoors. That 57 came from nowhere!

So after research I would need:
Wood stove. £80-£800.
Extra chimney bit and adapter for my specific tent £60.
Fireproof mat. £12.
Fire extinguisher £15
Smoke alarm. £15.
Co alarm £30.
You can get joint alarms but they're not very good apparently.
Wood £20 for 60 litre bag.
New kettle/bill can £12.

All adds up.
Not sure how much wood I would get through in an evening. I could always nip to a nearby garage for more but I'm certain that would be the most expensive way of getting it.

Seems a very expensive way of heating a tent.

Cheaper would be to choose a site in winter with electric hook up and a cheap electric heater...
