Camping practicalities and security for small children

We have no money, so the only possible we could go on is a camping trip. However Im a bit worried about the practicalities and security. I have this fear of the kids being very vulnerable with just material between them and a potential nutter.
So Id be grateful if some MNutters could calm my nerves re security and also reassure me that camping with a 5 yo and an 11 month old would not be hell! Thanks in advance

especially if you have a tent with and inner and a flysheet thats two sets of doors to get through.

people get a bit disorientated when sleeping in tents. I would be very surprised if a 5 year old would wake up, know where he was and work out the zips to get out. Zip the internal zips to the top and peg the flysheet zips down firmly. Remember you did this when you wake in the night for a pee, or you can spend a lot of time fumbling around in the dark!

We sleep together, really, our children are very small.

Thanx all for your advice, much appreciated!

But but but...
Ive been naughty today... I went out and bought a tent, without asking my camping virgin DP

Happily/hopefully DP only gave me a half joking ticking off!

I bought one of these!
