.....I always thought that, Auntyquated. Last year I booked Eurocamp in Tuscany,(Tuscany, eh? Part of my ongoing quest to become middle class. I even made my kids eat sea bass. Didn't see the Blairs, though) my sister booked the same camp direct for considerably less. As a result this year I booked a chalet direct with a Yelloh! site in Brittany that I have used previously (and know to be safe for my four marauding urchins) and a Brittany Ferries crossing for late July/early August.

On Sunday I realised that I had got the dates slightly wrong, and so attempted to change them. Just by means of comparison I looked at Eurocamp prices (expecting a feeling of smug pride at my clever booking).

.....however I discovered that late discounts (and the worsening exchange rate of the euro) made it £250 cheaper to book the same holiday with Eurocamp even after paying cancellation fees.

...so promptly cancelled my direct bookings and booked the Eurocamp holiday instead.

the site we are going to is £1,211.00 with keycamp for one week (Dover-Calais inc)

booked diect with the site it is 940 euros (so about £740 but then you would need a ferry D-C about £120

auntyquated · 10/06/2008 20:27

glad ours is still cheaper

pays to serach around

cheers cod, had a look, it looks lively enough for my lot. I have been in that area before and done a trip to a brilliant zoo nearby, best one i have ever been too in europe.

My only downside to the vendee is the weather is a tad unpredictable as its on the atlantic i think and can be a bit blowy. will speak to dh and see where he would like to go. thanks fo that

Having worked as a rep for both companies (although the last time was 10 yrs ago, not long after Eurocamp bought out Keycamp) I would say quality and cleanliness of the vans comes down to luck of the draw!

First site that I ran vans were ancient and no amount of the cleaning that I did (reps do the pre-season, during season and post-season cleaning) could bring them up to scratch (but they WERE clean!).

Second site - brand new vans, really reliable and hard working team of reps worked with me - still looked like new by end of season, never had a complaint.

Third season - brand new vans but my team of reps were a right feckless bunch that no amount of teamwork, cajoling, shouting or bribery seemed to change (none of them had EVER lived away from home before) and it was a really busy site so frequent change over of guests. Tried my hardest and 'cos the vans were brand new it never got too bad but cleanliness was never really up to scratch across the board - got so sick of it I ran away to Switzerland mid-season to work on a summer camp and never went back!

Try Thomson Al Fresco for v nice vans. No dishwashers though

sashmum · 12/06/2008 18:33

we have used keycamp, eurocamp, canvas and thomsom al fresco over the years and always have a fab holiday when staying in mobiles, and i think we have stayed in all of them from the very tiny to the super duper all singing and dancing villas. last year we took our own tent for two weeks in august and also had a fab time. yes it was cheaper but also was last minute, literally organised the week before. This year booked with keycamp into luxury mobile, used keycamp as they worked out the most reasonable, booked online but then rang and spoke to a real person to juggle ferry times etc, all very easy and no problems. have also in the pass booked direct with site, at this time of year if you haven't booked then your main problem will be choice and availability, good luck and have a super time

forevercleaning · 12/06/2008 20:10

thanks everyone, i have plenty of food for thought, now just need to find somewhere to squeeze us in during the summer hols

my sisters going with select camp for a week in august for £550 to holland seems cheap for that time of year but they do other countries too

Tas1 · 22/06/2008 11:53

Have been with Eurocamp for the last 10yrs, love them but they have got a bit pricey.
So this year I have booked with French Freedom. We are going to a great campsite 2mins down the road from the eurocamp site, It has same facilities and the tents and mobile homes are just as good.
We have booked the last week in July/first week in August in a mobile home.
Eurocamp quoted £1800 and French Freedom quoted £1200. Thats a £600 saving!!!
