Dog friendly, quiet, campsite needed in July/Aug

Tent camping recommendations needed - I’ll be on my own with my dog, during peak season, not ideal but it’s when I can take my holiday…

Extra points for a campsite walking distance to the beach. I love sea swimming but it is only any good for me if the dog can also come on the beach with me off-lead, owing to being alone/ her not tolerating being pinned down with a stake and a longline whilst I swim.

I’m considering Newgale in Pembrokeshire as it’s cheap and if it’s forecast to slate down I can cancel for minimal loss.

I need to be able to drive to my pitch for setup even if I can’t leave the car next to the pitch during the stay.

Preferably 5 hours max from south west London, which probably rules out lots of wonderful places like Scotland.

Thanks to anyone with ideas.

Burrowhayes near Minehead

Try Lobb Fields in Devon. It’s close to Saunton Sands which allows dogs off lead year round.

Thanks so much for the suggestions of campsites, @sanityisamyth and @Forgottenmyphone I will check those out.

the difficult thing is finding somewhere not completely overrun, so I can book late. I’m not going for a week in a tent with a dog if it’s going to piss it down every day 😂. I’d rather stay home and dry.

I saw some amazing places in west/ north west Scotland today on instagram when I was doomscrolling. Put them into Waze to see how far they were from me. 11 frigging hours of solid driving. I could nearly get to the Côte D’Azur in that time frame albeit I don’t think the dog would love the med summer heat. Plus I can’t afford the motorway tolls and the vet certificate etc.

Bigbury, @sunnyhoneybumblebee ! I think I went there as a kid, is it the place with the beach tractor thing?

That’s a doable drive from my house. As is Saunton Sands. I always did love Devon.

Check out camping canines on Facebook, there are some great suggestions as well as events

Thanks so much for your response @July202 . In the end I booked Newgale mostly for financial reasons (things are brassic here - it’s £72 for 6 nights in peak season!) but I will definitely bear in mind the Devon sites and camping canines on FB; off to join that group now as my holiday finances are unlikely to change in the next few years!

I also think tarka trail camping might suit ! Haven’t tried it yet but the location looks amazing, near Instow beach which is just dog paradise !
