Wind up/solar radio. Are they any good?

We're going camping 2nd June and think one of these will be better than forking out for a million battery's.

Are they worth it? Which have you got? Where's the best place to buy one?

I don't want to pay loads for one either.

TIA x

oh yes, they are good

ours is from millets, £20 iirc, lasts ages. wind up thingy.

also comes in nice colours, which i feel is important

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2008 20:23

Hey phoenix! Yes- they are GREAT!
DH begged for one for ages, then got a freeplay- he loves it- takes it to bed each night, under the covers! I kid you not - its so he doesn't wake dd with his yawnmaking riveting programmes on parliament etc
We will be taking it camping I'm sure.
We got it from john lewis- about £25 i think

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2008 20:29

DH says the solar panel doesn't charge it that much - and barely at all on most british days (ie cloudy)- he wouldn't recommend one to someone who was infirm because of the winding
They come with an electric charger too though... so you could charge before you go, and boost by winding. That said, he never does this, just winds each evening furtively under the duvet (ooh err)

Thanks for your help

I've shown the thread to DH and we've bought one off Ebay

Wow- quick work!
I was also going to say- don't get a digital one (DAB) because they use 20 times the power ie much more winding...

Phoenix · 22/05/2008 22:04

We've been looking at them on Ebay all evening so had a few we liked the look of but didn't know if they were worth it

we got one from millets awhile ago (a few years ago) and its a bit crap.

wind
wind
wind wind

half a song

wind
wind
wind
wind

etc.

I think they have come on a bit though.

I want one of those shaky torch thingys

RubberDuck · 22/05/2008 22:20

Yes we have both a torch and a radio that are wind up & solar. You do have to wind steadily for a couple of minutes not just a quick wind and you're done, but they are very good.

We've got this Freeplay one which I think was £35 when we got it, so £23 now is a good price. We tend to charge it from the mains mostly and save the winding for eg camping trips.

mini version, £20 (haven't got one of these though so I don't know how good it is)

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2008 22:52

thanks for that site WW- this is the one we have!

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2008 22:52

It has a torch too! Not that we need that in our own bedroom.

serin · 22/05/2008 23:18

WendyWeber · 22/05/2008 23:23

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2008 23:25

serin · 22/05/2008 23:28

I know you do Eachpeach, er...it was just a bit of a joke!!

EachPeachPearMum · 23/05/2008 13:54
