Just wondering if there's any families of 4 with a swb vw camper? And manage fine for space etc?

Been looking for ages and there's hardly any LWB in our budget feel like we might have to compromise on something.

Thank you

We have a LWB, honestly I would keep looking. We bought the van and got it converted might be an option?

Daughter has a LWB only two of them but a SWB is just too small. In our experience you are better with a bigger motorhome as you need more space especially if it's wet. For those who don't know Short Wheel Base and Long Wheel base the LWB is 18" longer so you can still stand up with the bed out and open the fridge.

Just bought a LWB as our first camper. It's only us two and a Labrador, wouldn't have a SWB as would feel cramped. (We did pay a fair whack but it suited our spec and as you say LWB command more money.)

Ours is SWB and we have plenty of room to stand up with the bed out and open the fridge, cook etc. With small children it would be tolerable but it’s great for two. Bear in mind that LWB is a bit harder to parallel park in towns and cities if you’re out and about. Love our camper ♥️

You have to think long & hard whether you could really cope with all of you in such a small vehicle when it is wet & windy.
When the weather is nice you can spread out under an awning, sitting in camping chairs, kids playing outside etc but if the weather suddenly closes in you would be forced into the vehicle and how long could you be comfortable for, especially if it sets in and goes on into the night? The forced close confinement could be enough to ruin the holiday for you.

Have to say that a camper (of any size) is not for us as we like a bit more space and have always been moho people.

Just make sure you have a decent awning and then you get the additional space.

We are going to look at a LWB tonight that we have found so hopefully 🤞🏻 fingers crossed! Would love a motorhome but no space to park it plus needs to be driven daily for school run etc too.

If it helps OP I have a 1983 VW camper and we go away in that as a family of four, plus large dog. We can't fit an awning due to the roof arrangement but we have a small freestanding living room tent that we pitch up next door. Plenty of space. Ours does have a big roof though. Hope you find one, I love ours!

We have a SWB and there are 4 of us plus a dog. We have a large awning for longer trips but manage just fine with a small pop up tent for weekend trips.

Missionimprobable · 09/02/2025 09:11

We had a LWB, it was a squeeze for space with just two of us.
I'd buy an awning, if there's one attached (that pulls out), you'll only need to buy the sides and front.
You and DH could sleep in it too if the weather allows.
I'd look on campervan groups, so many people buy vans then decide it's not for them and sell their accessories.

@williteverstopraining2024 how did you get on with your viewing?

williteverstopraining2024 · 10/02/2025 21:17

@NormalForNorfoIk we got one a LWB one! We tested it out this weekend and was fab however turned disastrous when my 4 year old started vomiting in the night 🤣😭 worst nightmare! Luckily I had a lot of bedding and an air mat up in the pop up as otherwise that would be the van ruined haha

Good news on the new van... not on the vomit!
We got ours in January and haven't managed to get away in it yet due to work schedules and other things planned in. However have been getting to grips with everything and kitting it out.
Found I can view the solar panel via an app which is quite exciting!
