don't want a gas lamp with DS- which battery one lasts and is good light?

before we went to gas lamps we used a sucession of crappy battery lamps. The light was always rubbish and batteries went really quickly. Have they improved? Which ones last longish and give off enough light for 2 people to read in a tent? Cheers

How about LED head torches? Bright and last a long time - just a rather limited pool of light.

yeah- thought about it, but now we have a tent we can sit in ( I know luxury!) we'd like to be able to play cards etc and so thought it'd be nice to get a lamp that lights up an area

I got a Gelert 12 LED one last year and it seems good. Only about £10.

hettie - know what you mean. We do use a little gas lamp but i can't read by it anymore so I'm trialling the headtorch this week.

Our wind up lamp isn't bright enough to read by, although fine for getting undressed etc. We have a rechgargeable lamp which is great for reading by, it will charge from mains or a car cigarette lighter. It cost about £25 so wasn't cheap but is really useful and has two brightness settings. Can't remember what its called though.

We got one of these last year. It's a tiny little thing and we thought it would be handy for dcs to carry on night-time trips to the toilet. However, it turned out to be much brighter than our big lamps and lasts much longer. Also it only takes AA batteries which makes life easier. We ended up buying another one and not bothering with the other lamps.

To save on your batteries, get a REALLY good re-charger & a set of re-chargeable batteries, esp coming into better weather-you'll be camping more. This is what we've done with BOTH camping light & both of our digi cameras. We've got a uni-ross charger which came up quite good in a review.
