After a lovely message this morning from someone who had seen one of my previous recommendations on here, I thought it might be good to have a thread of where people stayed this summer that they would recommend (or not!). Weather was pretty awful, but we stayed at three great sites over 3 weeks - two in Denmark (long drive), and one in the Netherlands:
Vammen camping - Viborg, Jutland, Denmark.
Relatively large campsite in the middle of nowhere, overlooking a large lake (rent canoes, paddleboards). Known for musicians staying to play together - practicing during the day, then performing in the communal hall every evening. Large fire lit every evening, and large tables for playing games or eating meals during the day. We visited the Lego House at Billund from here - about 90mins drive, but mostly just chilled. Teen described unique atmosphere as 'a bit like a summer camp'.
Hillerod Camping, north of Copenhagen, Denmark
Although quite expensive, its obvious why this one has won awards. Relatively small town campsite - walking distance to Hillerod with its shops and castle. Easy 30 mins drive to Copenhagen, or north to beaches, or from local train station. Fully equipped indoor kitchen and living room - with antique furniture and fresh flowers everywhere as well as someone coming round to light candles on all the tables and around the campsite every night. Cleanest toilets/showers I've seen anywhere. Cabins for rent also looked nice.
Zeevangshoeve, Edam, north of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Small farm campsite, well organised, good facilities and easy cycle into Edam or 30 mins drive into Amsterdam. Rabbits, pygmy goats, alpaccas and go-carts on site.
