Recommend me a 2-person tent

DS is going on a weeklong camp this summer and needs to take his own tent. There is a possibility we can borrow one, but I’m happy to buy our own (possibly prefer it in case of damage, etc.). There will be help putting up the tents.

Budget is flexible and I am expecting my boys to use the tent in future, so am happy to make an investment. So, any recommendations please for a good, reliable 2-person tent?

Vango are pretty good without being crazy expensive.

Get metal poles, fibreglass poles are terrible and fiddly.

A free standing tent is helpful if the ground is hard to get pegs into.

E.g. their Helvellyn 200 looks decent.

Or maybe the alpkit Tetri.

We got this one for the boys: https://www.millets.co.uk/16231964/eurohike-avon-3-dlx-nightfall-tent-16231964

It’s great. You can fit 3 scouts in it, but it’s comfortable for 2, with a gap between roll mats. Also has a porch area which is great for them getting changed / sitting / keeping rucksacks in. Very easy and quick to put up.

I’d definitely recommend it. Got it as a birthday present for them a good few years ago and it’s been used loads since. It’s not super compact - the ones they take on D of E are a little bit lighter and smaller - but they’re not quite as comfy or roomy!

I’ve always gone one up when it comes to people size, as it can be cramped once all the kit is in.

Probably better getting a 3 person tent if two people intend to share in the future. (Unless they are hiking, in which case the lighter the better.)

Definitely go for one that is a blackout tent, and has a porch like the one a pp suggested

Thanks for the recs.

I probably should have said we already have a larger tent for when two or more are camping, the two-person tent would be for solo use.

We have the vango 300 galaxy, they have a smaller version too. Good tent. Ours sleeps 4 so sleeps 2 basically

I can't get my head round the idea of over £300 for a two person tent! I would simply buy a Quechua 2 seconds 3 person tent. Goes up in ... well, 2 seconds, for popularity with trip leaders and envy of other kids. Lasts well. Yes, go up a size for comfort, so a 3 person for two. Can be bought with or without blackout.

Disassembly is more of an art, but is actually simple once you know what you are doing. I was taught by someone tiny who in turn was taught by their DS8. Plenty of videos on youtube

By the way, you do know to buy a 2 layer tent, don't you? So if a pop up tempts you, do avoid any other make unless they can demonstrate that it actually has 2 layers (this generally avoids condensation drips).
