Help me choose our first family tent!

Hello!

I've been camping in the past but I'm not a camper... it's not been regular. But I'd love my family to become a camping family and want to buy a tent for some weekends this summer. We're a 3 person family, myself, my partner and our 16 month old.

The requirements are:

  • easy to pitch
  • blackout bedrooms
  • 4 person minimum - ideally I'd like a 4.5 or 5 person, 6 probably a little bigger than needed
  • possible to stand up in
  • under £500 - ideally I'd be able to get a footprint and carpet for that too.

I'm intrigued by the air tents, and know they meet the easy pitch requirements, but are also more expensive and much bigger packed (we don't have a big boot but might get a roof box).

My partner is going to want to spend the minimum amount of money and I can imagine him saying why do we need a 4 person when there's 3 of us? Whereas I want something affordable but that has a little room to grow with us.

Help me oh wise ones!

(Open to any other gear tips for a new camping family with a very young child)

Easy to pitch is eg Vango Skye 500. I currently have a vango Winslow II 500 which came from Amazon- there are many similar.

It may fill half your boot. You will end up needing a roof box, or trailer, in my experience.

Oh, and 5 man is definitely not overkill size-wise!!!

We just bought the Berghaus adhara 500 which might meet your needs! Haven’t received it yet so can’t comment on ease of pitching.
