quiet(ish) sites in France near beach... anyone?

I haven't been camping in France with my own family before... dd is 14 months, and I've been looking at what is available on Eurocamp/Keycamp/Haven/Matthews etc but am quite overwhelmed by the sheer number of sites. We were looking for somewhere not too far south (want to cross by ferry then not to have too long a drive) and as dd is quite young we don't really need all the whizzy water slides and bars/restaurants etc. We'd be quite happy somewhere small - the main criterion are close to beach, quiet (i.e. no noisy discos etc) and we'd like a mobile home rather than a tent. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Oh, and I'm a teacher so we'll be heading out there in July/August. Thanks!!!

la Rochelle area has some nice camp sites that are actually on the beach and quite small as well. We have used a few our girls are 3 and 2 so we dont want a disco or noisy site, we want a play area and beach. Most seem to have mobile homes or log cabin type things

you can also fly into La Rochelle airport from a few regional airports quite reasonably

carisma only have a few sites and they are all walkable to beaches. Only drawback is they restrict you to Saturday arrivals etc.

We use this website to get campsite details, then book elsewhere or direct!

We also have visited Carisma sites. Les Sables d'Olonne was great as was Brem sur Mer. Baech at Brem nearer but Les Sables has some amazing restaurants. Had a fab time both holidays. Recommend a cabin on the crossing though, even day journeys.

A lovely site is in the loire valley, called Chantepie, it's really lovely. if you go onto ukcampsite there are a few reviews about it. We went about two years ago went ours were little and loved it...it has a restaurant/bar but no disco so you can enjoy a lovely meal and glass or two of wine over looking the river without the 'boom boom' of a disco blaring out!!

Hi pleasemum do you have a website for chantepie? I've heard about it before and I'd like to book us in there for our holiday this year.

Lucycat · 04/02/2008 20:07

here is the Chantepie website

they are lovely people to speak to on the phone too but you can book online - we are going there this summer!

Camping Bel is quite a small site with a lovely beach just over the road. It's in la tranche sur Mer, in the Vendee. It's also a 10 min walk from a nice little town with plenty of restaurants and a supermarket just down the road.

camping village la plage at le Guilvenic and take your bikes!! Right on beach with cycle track into nice wee town. V quiet site - pool complex basic but the beach is on your doorstep!
