Tent with good ventilation for hot weather

Lilyann60 · 10/07/2022 18:24

Me and DP thinking of selling my little Eriba caravan next spring and getting an up to the minute 4+ berth tent. We are away in Devon atm and temps reaching high 20 c

My query is are there any tents with really good ventilation ie that you can roll sections up, have fly screens down at night and allow a through breeze. I’ve got this in caravan and awning because we can open windows fully at night but still have fly screens down

I can’t bear to be too hot in bed ( hormones tbh )
Various reasons for considering selling the van. I’m just interested in a good tent option so we can cut costs of owning a caravan
We love camping !!
.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or tips.

We have an outwell montana tent which has two side doors with fly screens allowing a through breeze as well as the main entrance. The bedroom doors also half half fly screens you can leave open and the tent has vents on the back.

Thank you. I’ll take a look online

Most of the good branded tents will have a door that comes in 3 layers: mesh, clear window, and fully closed. E.g a Vango Icarus. A front door and a side door that can both be opened help.

Look also for ventilation points.

The cheaper models made exclusively for GoOitdoors et Al might shortcut some of these details.

Cotton or polycotton tents are much less ‘sweaty’ too.

Bell tent. Made of cotton, super breathable and have ventilation pockets with mesh which can be zipped up or left open. I've camped in some got weather and never had a hot tent or condensation like you do with polyester tents.

With all the will in the world, even at 20°c i wake up hotter than a roast chicken at 6am. I camped a few weeks ago in Northumberland with highs of 22°c and I couldn't go back in the tent until sunset.

Interesting. Thank you.

Coleman octagon tent. You can open all the sides with fly screens if you want

DevilsAdvocaat · 16/07/2022 10:05

I was going to say Coleman octagon. You can get the blackout version and it's amazingly cool and airy.

Decathlon Fresh and Black tents. They have inflatable and poled versions and go from 2 man up to about 6 or 8 man I think and they have pop up versions. I'm sure they claim to be about 5 degrees cooler than normal tents. All have different configurations for windows, doors and ventilation points but they all have highly reflective material on the outside and almost blackout in the bedroom parts to keep it darker and more importantly cooler. Absolute game changer for me this year at Glasto it meant that I could get a lie in till about 10-11am most mornings instead of being cooked and wake up in a sweaty mess as soon as the sun comes up.

No, just don’t sell your Eriba, they keep so much cooler inside than a tent.
They take much less effort to pitch than a tent, and can be used well into the autumn and Spring than a tent.

can you tell we recently swopped to a ‘van from a tent and have not one single regret at all

Lilyann60 · 20/07/2022 21:35

Thanks to all your responses. Hmmm. Well, thinking maybe to keep Eriba van for now. The recent heatwave in a tent may have been a tad unbearable… probably unbearable anywhere tbh. But thanks again to all responses. Food for thought xx

Bell tent without a doubt. Easy to put up, can roll the sides up a couple of foot, the whole thing looks like its floating, lovely and cool but can have a wood burner in it with a little chimney for the winter.

Heavy, and hard to hang out to dry.
