Anyone know of good campsites on Isle of Wight, thinking of going there at Whitsun half-term.
Not too big or commercial.
Thanks.

Grange Farm on the west coast was fab

We stayed at a very nice, not big and commercial site, last Whitsun called Ninham Farm. Don't have a link but you can google it. There is a games room and an outdoor pool, 2 playgrounds and loads of wild rabbits! It was virtually empty when we were there and the children had a great time running free - there was terrible weather, though.

ChippyMinton · 13/01/2008 13:33

The Orchards. Nice indoor pool and...well that's about it really. v.quiet.

ArcticRoll · 13/01/2008 15:51

Thank you for your suggestions-will research them!
I've never been to IoW but sounds like a great place for good old fashioned family holiday.
Just hope the weather is better than last years Whitsun week- we had to abandon camping after one night.

The caravan and camping club have an excellent site on the IoW, you'd need to join and book now though as they fill up quickly.

We camp at nodes point and love it but suspect too big for you.

dustystar · 14/01/2008 13:44

this site is lovely. Really nice countryside and fantastic loos and showers. We stayed at Whitsun two years running and it was nice weather both years.

ArcticRoll · 14/01/2008 17:13

Thanks,lots of good suggestions.
Now must get skates on and choose and book.
The downside of the increase in popularity of camping is that you have to be ultra organised and book up early.
I'm a bit of a leave it to the last minute kinda gal.

Dont go to Park Resorts , it was like hell on earth last year and has put me off camping for life.

Dear god I bloody hate it aaarggggghhhhh (see still not over it I may need counselling )

ArcticRoll · 14/01/2008 17:18

Why was it so awful mosschops?

OP posts:
mosschops30 · 14/01/2008 18:20

Urgh where do I start:

nasty chavvy families with no control over their kids
toilets and showers not cleaned for hours on end
dirty facilities
broken facilities
people pitching their tents right otuside mine

oh god it still makes me shudder now. It was everything i despise in a holiday. Never ever again

AbbyMumsnet · 14/01/2008 18:22

My DH took DS to The Orchards - they loved it.

ScoobyDoo · 14/01/2008 18:24

We went to grange farm we had a great time there, loved it, right on beach, clean & tidy & not to big over crowded.

hennipenni · 14/01/2008 22:17

We went to Grange Farm last August, lovely site, would go again, did get busy as it was school holidays but still didn't feel over crowded. Just be aware that if it gets very windy you have no shelter as the site is on a cliff top. A fair few of the "cheaper" branded and incorrectly pitched tents got blown out to sea or destroyed during a bad storm while we were there.

BadKitten · 15/01/2008 12:18

Can third grange farm and can second the warning about the weather. We went that during the same week that Boscastle had the flood. So many tents were torn to pieces. Luckily we had pitched away from the sea in the lee of a hedge. It was very very dramatic seeing each storm come across the sea - we'd have a few minutes to hunker down in the tent and then the weather would hit with a huge ferocity. One early morning we heard dd weeping in her compartment. When we went in the tent was billowing around her face and not only that but a wasp had some how got in. Poor child. I'm surprised she didnt get a camping phobia!!

ArcticRoll · 17/01/2008 17:37

Thanks for all the recommendations.
