Camping Holidays in French Alps

Has anybody done it, ie with Canvas, Keycamp etc. Travelling there sometime this summer with dc 4 & 6. When would the best time be to go and to where. Does it get really hot there?

Hi I'm planning to camp this summer in Swiss Alps and at Lake Garda, but have never been there before either.

However i have used Keycamp before and enjoyed it, so i'm hoping this holiday will be a success. The website says that August has 9 hrs daily of sunshine (avge) and avge temp is 27 degrees, though I know that one has to be prepared for unpredictable weather in the mountains themselves.

We've done independent camping to the Alps (although it was a few years ago, and before children). Can't really advise on where to go (we went to Samoens), but you'd probably be better off going earlier (July) rather than late August for example. The main problem is that you're subject to poorer weather in the mountains, and the summer comes to an end sooner, however on warm days, it can get very hot. We went late August/early Sept, and had rain most days. It didn't stop us doing anything, as we did a lot of walking, but harder if you have small children.

FWIW, I would not recommend going anywhere too remote, as you may find that activities on a campsite are limited in bad weather, and you have to go further afield (along winding mountain roads) to find something to do. We went to the Massif Central last year, to a fairly remote campsite, which would have been idyllic in the sun, but poor weather meant we spent a lot of time in the car going to the nearest towns (over an hour away) to find indoor swimming pools etc, and slightly warmer weather (for a few days, the temperature was less than 10 degrees C). We're camping in France again this year, and are looking for somewhere hilly again, but a little further south!
