Pros and cons of camping toilets

I have a new caravan whish is a shop/market stall

I need a portable loo for if I travel to an event or stay over

I will always try to use facilities provided but I need a loo

No water supply so is a bucket type one the best option - how about emptying? Do I need chemicals?

Composting loo? I know nothing - in fact I know less than nothing!

You don’t need water on tap you use bucket to put some water in base and top (to flush) add in some special chemicals. These stop it smelling. You need to disconnect the base and carry it to elsin point not down a toilet. They can be heavy when full so lots of people use little trolley. If however it’s just you and dont mind squatting down a bucket with a lid over night will do the job and empty in the morning.

As i might not use it on a trip I wonder if a water one would be more complicated

You can get a basic plastic portable loo like the Kampa Khazi, line it with a bun liner, put some cat litter in the bottom, knot up and out in the rubbish.

I didnt think you could put human waste in the rubbish- that being allowed make litter an interesting option

I second both re cat litter option, or using without and flushing down normal toilet.

Bivvy loo on Amazon! Folds flat enough to fit in a rucksack, uses gel crystals to absorb urine in a bag which you then dispose of at home. We have a small campervan and its a life saver!!

We have a dry composting loo that doesn’t use any chemicals or water. However, it has a integral fan venting to the outside that is permanently running. It is also quite large.

You need a thetford flushing loo. It is the same as you'd find in a caravan. You put blue chemical and a bit of water in the waste tank (where the wee goes!) and pink chemical plus lots of water into the top tank (flushing tank). You have a sliding disk that you move via a leaver to open the waste tank to wee, etc. Recommend camping loo paper - it is thinner and disolves. However, you will need to empty waste regularly (depending on how much you use it so probs every two or three days) into the chemical waste disposal point. Be aware that when full, they are heavy so we used to have a little luggage trolley to strap it to.

For the bucket type option, you can line the bucket with a bin bag and use a commode absorbent pad that turns the wee to gel and neutralises odour - no liquids sloshing about and you can then dispose in a bin.
