Hiya - we are going to get kitted out for camping , gone are the days I want to sleep on a sweaty mattress and pillows someone else has dribbled on.
There are so many tents on the market !
One of our must haves is that it can't be too complicated - my youngest is autistic and wouldn't tolerate us spending too much time faffing !
We are going to buy some extra long wind breakers to create a pen of sorts outside the entrance -give us a fighting chance when he tries to run away
Any recommendations would be gratefully received 😇

The Coleman Octagon tent is very quick and easy to put up. I've never used an air tent but I wonder if people would suggest that as an option?

Oceanp94 · 26/07/2020 16:54

The Coleman octagon is the only one I've really considered actually -looks great .

How big do you need? I have a 5m bell tent that I can put up by myself in around 15 mins. It is heavy though so I separate out the poles from the canvas so can carry in two parts. Also have a large canvas awning - easily big enough for table and chairs

LunaLoveFood · 26/07/2020 17:06

Vango airbeam with electric pump. I can put up our 6 birth on my own in 20 min, with 2 of us it's more like 10.

TheLurkingOne · 26/07/2020 20:47

Bell tent without a doubt! Airy, not sweaty and cramped, very easy and quick to put up.

Oceanp94 · 27/07/2020 08:32

Thanks for the replies -there's 2 adults and 2 children

Two adults can get a Vango Icarus up within 10 minutes.

SlipperyLizard · 27/07/2020 09:29

We have an emperor bell tent (two poles, massive) and it goes up in 20 mins, plus canvas is by far the nicest material to camp under. If we hadn’t bought it we’d have gone for an inflatable polycotton tent.

InTheWings · 27/07/2020 09:31

Can you go to a camping shop where they have tents on display?

Quick tents to go up are:
Bell tents. Lovely canvas. But do you want a tent with windows? A porch? Canvas tents are bulky and heavy and you need to be fake to dry then thoroughly once home if you have a wet pack up.

Tunnel tents. Simple design, livjng area / porch at the front, bedrooms at the rear. I can put up a tunnel tent by myself, two adults, very quick.

Air beam / inflatable tents: very quick to put up with an electric pump. Are far more expensive than pole tents and much heavier and bulkier in the boot.

I have a 5 meter bell tent. It's huge and comfy and I can put it up and pack it up on my own. Very straightforward

Fenellapitstop · 27/07/2020 11:34

We have a 5m bell tent, by far the easiest tent I've ever put up

TheWayOfTheWorld · 27/07/2020 11:35

Another fan of bell tents here - I'd never pitched a tent before getting mine, manage it all by myself no problem. Even better when DH is around to share the load!

thisstooshallpass · 27/07/2020 13:37

Air tent - plenty available in superb condition second hand.

They're not always heavier or bulkier. I have a 6 man air tent which weighs 20kilos and is the size of a large suitcase packed up.

OneForMeToo · 27/07/2020 16:13

Depends what you want from a tent.

Bell tents are lovely but a ball ache if you don’t have the space in your garden to dry as they need to be bone dry and it takes a while. Also again no windows for wet days.

Air tents fast to go up, very heavy and very expensive.

Standard pole tent cheaper than air, lighter as well. Come in the same shapes and sizes as air tents.

We have a tunnel pole tent, me and dh put it up easily and it’s rather large. If you go for air check the reviews although most where sorted some still have recently had issues with split beams etc

Polkadotdelight · 27/07/2020 16:54

Seriously, I still love our octagon!

Wind breaks are a pain to put up - have you tried it? Much easier with 2 people or 3 depending how big it is.

You can buy air beam ones but they are v.expensive.

KoalasAteMyHomework · 01/08/2020 22:18

We got a Vango Airbeam tent. DH could put it up himself whilst I watched our two sons (our 5yo son is also autistic and a flight risk if not watched like a hawk!). It's a Stargrove II air and has a big living space which was a lifesaver when it rained heavily and we had to stay in the tent - lots of room for DS to move about in!

KoalasAteMyHomework · 01/08/2020 22:18

Sorry meant to say it's the 600xl we have. So very big, but it's what we needed for the reason mentioned above.

30not13 · 02/08/2020 13:37

We have an Outwell 5 person tunnel tent (Collingwood) took around 10 mins to pitch, very easy. (I'm discounting the extra ten mins because of rain, slippy hands and soggy ground, wasn't the tent's fault though!) it took ten mins in perfect conditions on our first practise pitch.

TheABC · 02/08/2020 13:59

Bell tents are incredibly fast to put up, but a PITA to take down if wet. Another vote for the Vango Airbeam, if you can bear nylon tents.

In stead of a wind break, look at getting an event shelter with sides. It will become your "dinning area" and unlike wind breaks, will stay up.

I'm really happy with this. Up in 10 minutes, easy for one person to erect and comfortably fits two adults and two children.

Kab30 · 05/08/2020 09:32

I've just bought an 8 berth octagon ...any tips?? Is It big enough to separate sections and sit in chairs if rains? X

GigantosaurusRex · 05/08/2020 21:22

@Kab30 ours fits our 3 camp beds and 3 camp chairs easily.

Kab30 · 06/08/2020 08:47

@gigantrex...so can you sit in it separated from bed when it rains? Thanks for advice x

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2020 08:49

YY to Vango Airbeam!
