What do you do about food when camping if you are slightly scared of cooking?

That's cooking whilst camping obv. I do cook at home. But me and 4 dcs (10, wild 8, 5 and 2) and hot things within reach = scary.

I use a Trangia, which is a bit safer than some stoves, and either make dh take dd for a walk or zip her up in the inner tent and put up with the screaming.

Not sure how helpful that will be to you with your 4 though, sorry.

(BTW did you have 4 in order to recreate the family in Swallows and Amazons? In which case you don't need to cook around them at all, just send them all off to an island with some matches and hope for the best )

Well, my Susan is not at all practical, my John is having his 'orrible eights (and is likely to push people into the water if they annoyed him), my Roger is about right but Titty is only 2. More of a Bridget really. Besides, I want to go too

cereal for breakfast
sandwiches for lunch
take away fish and chips etc,or cold cooked stuff ...like those ready cooked chickens with salad, for dinner

could get a bit boring though.

Hmm. Have a problem with takeaway food. Because I don't tend to eat it, when I do have something v. occasionally it tastes like shite. Perhaps I'm just going to the wrong places? Also, I'm vegan which is harder to buy for.

And there are not many one-pot meals my fusspots will eat. May end up living off veg stew, apples and oatcakes

Breakfast- pain au chocolate, crossants, bread and choc spead or jam,fruit juice.
Tea -raw veg. crisps/ potato salad, bread, lots of fruit. We also do chese, rice pudding,quich and cold meat but I guess you won't.
We eat out at lunch time if possible.

I think what I feel most daunted by is the sheer amount of food the dcs consume - and probably even more whilst camping!

We bought a camping kitchen thing and we've got a fold up table for eating at which made a difference, we were cooking and eating at same table before. When our baby is bigger, I think we will cook in the gazebo and cordon it off with windbreakers but DS 5 and DD 3 keep their distance, handy hint = swingball!!!!!

Sorry! I tend to worry that if I mention the word vegan too soon, people will just run away screaming

Dd1 is vegan, ds1 and ds2 eat eggs/cheese, dd2 eats egg but is avoiding dairy atm.

Rice/quinoa and veg type meals. Pasta and things. Veggie sausage/veg/potato, etc. Stew and dumplings. Stir fry.

That kitchen looks useful but - I dunno. I have rose-tinted ideas of cooking over a simple fire, made from freshly gathered wood.

Yes, I will be the only adult. Dd1 and ds1 are often good babysitters - but they are liable to become suddenly and desperately incapable at critical moments.

Haven't actually made concrete plans yet! Am thinking of starting v. small - a night or 2 - and building up to more. Assuming we cope!

Have commited to a small festival though - 2 or 3 nights... but will be able to buy some decent stuff there hopefully.
