Would you camp late Aug/early Sept?

Thinking of camping in Cornwall 29th Aug to 1st Sept. it's the only dates now that we can all do that have availability.

The dc start back at school on Tuesday 3rd Sept.

It just feels a bit late in the season, the prices are reduced too then.

I would! It is late but traffic will be better, sites will be less crowded, and you save money. Weather should still be warm enough not to freeze!!

You've made me consider booking something last minute!!

Brakebackcyclebot · 12/08/2019 13:34

Why wouldn't you? Often the weather is fabulous then. Quieter is good in Cornwall!

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 12/08/2019 13:35

I went on that weekend a few years back and it tiddled down the whole weekend so based on my admittedly limited experience, I wouldn't! The weather's been so unpredictable this year I'd not risk it.

Justajot · 12/08/2019 13:36

We've camped at that time of year for a few years and it has been a brilliant time to go. Much more successful than the last few weeks would have been.

Brakebackcyclebot · 12/08/2019 13:38

It can tiddle down in Cornwall or anywhere in the UK at any time! What's the worst that could happen? You get wet & go home?

ExpletiveDelighted · 12/08/2019 13:41

Yes, we have more than once and had fabulous weather (south coast). Having had to bail out this weekend due to high wind we are also thinking about going that weekend.

CoffeeRunner · 12/08/2019 13:44

I would. There is every chance of having lovely weather that weekend - and that’s the main ingredient of an enjoyable camping holiday! Well, that and wine.

We went camping in Wales a couple of weeks ago - so end of July/start of August. We had 2 or 3 lovely days but also 2 or 3 very wet & stormy days.

xyzandabc · 12/08/2019 13:46

Why wouldn't you? What are your misgivings?

How is late August/early Sept any different to mid August or June/July?

If you'd said January, I can understand and would have said yes quite do-able but only if you are prepared with the right equipment and attitude.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 12/08/2019 13:47

I would but I love camping. This summer has been so dreadful it should have improved by then surely. I have only been to Cornwall once in a caravan. First part of the week was fab the rest of the week was dreadful so we went home early. Definitely worth a try though.

Arghplaydoh · 12/08/2019 14:00

Only concerns are that it's getting a bit Autumny, a bit chilly - but the weather has been unpredictable all Summer. That's why we didn't go a few weeks ago because of bad weather.

Also that it's a bit close to the dc going back to school. We are looking at returning on 1st Sept, dc are at school on Tues 3rd Sept. I suppose that's a daft reason really. They'd have the Monday to relax before going back to school.

Other than that, if it's quieter in Cornwall that's a bonus.

Sorry just realised I've repeated everything I said in my op Hmm

The only drawback is that it is getting dark earlier by then, but that's not the end if the world. Especially if you go to sites that allow campfires.

Clayplease · 12/08/2019 21:03

We did that on the Lizard in Cornwall maybe slightly later- it was lovely!! Slightly quieter than mid Aug too which was great.

Yes I would. We do a festival the weekend before every year and the weather has been very mixed but great the past few years. It does get dark surprisingly early so be prepared (get ready for bed straight after dinner and cuddle round fire/lantern in warm night attire. Magical actually)

Lovemusic33 · 15/08/2019 15:11

We will be camping that weekend too (I hope), we were meant to be camping today but have cancelled due to tomorrow’s awful weather forecast. I camp in October but without the dc’s as they find it too cold. The weather can be hit and miss, it has been all summer, I’m hoping for a late summer 🤣

Funf · 15/08/2019 19:35

Yes but just dont tell anyone how good the weather can be in early september

hillbilly · 19/08/2019 19:58

In my experience, sept and even Oct can be warmer than August and the temp variation (day to night) less. Sun sets earlier but not a bad thing as can get kids in bed by 10 rather than 11 😂

mamaduckbone · 20/08/2019 22:44

We always go for our last camp of the year in September - this year it's weekend of the 8th but it has been right towards the end of the month. The only concession we make is EHU so we can take a fan heater to warm the tent up a bit before bed! Works a treat.

As others have said it gets dark much earlier but that's nice (apart from the year we got stuck in traffic after an accident and had to try and put the tent up in the dark by the light of the car headlights...)
