Can you boil water on a disposable BBQ?

I'm taking DSs camping for a couple of days and I want to keep it as low-tech as possible. We have a fairly rubbishh gas camping stove but I want to leave it at home and use disposable bbqs (always scared gas camping stove will blow up).
Does a little bbq generate enough heat to boil water?

No. Also quite wasteful. Get a new, single burner gas one. Cheap at Argos or pick up used from Ebay.

A little bbq will easily create enough heat to boil water yes.

But I agree, don't get a disposable. Quite good are the bucket bbqs - only about £10, portable and reusable.

Oh, a dad. This might be sexist but my instincts force me to trust a dad implicitly on the subject of bbqs. Plus, you are saying what I want to heat. I think I will take the stove but try the bbq first. WE have a little bucket one which I could use.

The bucket bbq's are fab and yep, about a tenner.

We picked up a great gas stove for a fiver in a boot sale.

Actually I'm not really an expert, but I like those bucket barbies, and I'm aware that disposables are really shit in terms of waste and chemicals (and as a result banned in France for example).

Anyway, have fun, the weather's making me feel like going camping at last!

Oh if disposable ones are so bad environmentally I will stop using them . Will take our little bucket bbq and our rubbish gas stove, and experiment.

you are better off following cap and expat's advice anyway I'm sure! But it sounds like you will have all options covered.

We need a bigger car before we can contemplate going camping again anyway. It was tough before and now we have an extra family member this year and inevitably yet more stuff. I also still long for a campervan - this has been going on 20 years!

It's FAST to boil water on a stove. Far faster than any BBQ.

One of my pet hates while camping is when someone lights a disposable bbq upwind of you and you have acrid barbecue fumes blowing all over you. Normally you just put up with this with good humour because bbqs are all part of camping, but if someone lit one up at 8 in the morning just for coffee I'd be mightily pissed off.

If you're scared of gas, how about a little meths burner like the Mini Trangia?

Is it possible that your stove is 'rubbish' because of a clogged pipe? They can get clogged, particularly with certain types of fuel. Would be worth sticking a pipe cleaner down it to see if that's the problem - cheaper than buy a new one, too!

v inefficient to use a bbq to boil water anyway - takes ages to get hot enough and is then hot for much longer than you need.

Thanks for all your advice. I've looked out the gas stove and will use that, with the bucket bbq as a fallback.
And Kathy6inch, I take your point about early-morniong barbie fumes! Will def avoid that.
My problem is that I am irrationally afraid of gas. Convinced will just randomly explode. Must get over it!!
And should have used the or emoticon when said dad better than mums at bbq. I value all advice equally, and certainly my own dp is crap at all the caveman stuff, including bbqs
