Anyone else off to a Scout camp/jamboree this weekend?

With the start of the World Scout Jamboree in Essex this weekend, we're off to the Hampshire Jamboree in the New Forest this weekend.

The site is currently home to the New Forest Show, and has been described by the local press as "The Somme". DD (2.8), DS (9 months) and lots of Cubs are looking forward to their tents.

We're less sure! Wellies r us.

Is anyone else braving the elements at a Scout/Guide event this week?

I'm not camping but ds1 is in cubs and ds2 in Beavers. They're dead excited, fngers crossed that the weather's good.

I've seen the reports on it on TV, with Prince William banging a drum. It looks like its going to be an amazing experience for all involved. DD is doing a similar thing with the Guides next year. I'm sure you'll have a blast!

Both my DS are going to the Scottish camp for a week tomorrow. It's relatively dry up here, but freezing!! Have packed lots of jumpers. Here's hoping everyone doing anything scout/cub/beaver related this week has a fabulous time.

My mum bought ds1 a huge army typr canvas rucksack. He's quite small and the sack's huge, he could easily live in it lol.
It's packed up and ready to go, christ knows how he'll lift it the amount of stuff I've been asked to pack

I think my brother is there, he's been to the ones in recent years in Chile, Mexico and Thailand......so I'm presuming he's gone to this one too.

DS2 and DS3 (both cubs) are going on camp (locally) tomorrow until Wednesday,and they're off to the jamboree for the day on Monday (I'm also going cos I help out).

Long way to go for the day, lol.

DS1 (Scouts - different group) is off to Poole on Tuesday, and will be on Brownsea Island for the Sunrise celebration itself on Wednesday. He'll be going to the Jamboree for the day on Friday before he comes home.

Ds is away to camp for 10 days, not to the jamboree though, their are older scouts from their unit going though.

ds off to local sunrise camp on tuesday/wednesday.

We visited Brownsea last week though for the day, and saw all the preparations for their sunrise camp. It looked huge.(And VERY MUDDY) although great fun.

Here's hoping Brownsea has dried out a bit by Wednesday, lol. Don't fancy DS1's mucky clobber (uniform, rather than camping kit) residing in a bag for three days.

I dropped my dd off at the scout centre in New Forest yesterday (she was ill when ds went on Sun) - it was drying out and looked idyllic. Just the kind of summer fun children should have. They are off to Brownsea on Wed morning and the forecast looks pretty good.

AAh thats hy DS is going to be at the top of a rather high mountain at 8am tomorrow [doh], I thought it was their leader doing the usual tire them out so I get at least one nights sleep thing

lol Skribble, leaders don't sleep on camp, rofl at the very thought.

My younger two are now home from their camp, and have had a fabulous time.

They thoroughly enjoyed the jamboree on Monday (as did I). DS2 is particularly impressed that he got to shake the hand of the President of South Korea and exchange his friendship bracelet for a jamboree badge, lol.

All but two of their group were up at 5 am for the sunrise itself, prior to the ceremony at 8 am.

DS1 should have had a wonderful day on Brownsea today.

Oh I know but they are away for 10 night so they will have to sleep sometime , perhaps thats what the Haddows bags being packed in the van were for

Lol, I do have a big pile.

Let's just say I'm glad I'm away for the weekend, and DH is in charge.

(there's karate gis as well as the scouting stuff, good job there's no school uniform, lol)

OOhhhhh! Loads of you! We're now back from our camp, and the washing machine has belched loudly at the end of its final load.

DS (9months) and DD (2.8) had a whale of a time with the Cubs and Scouts, and we all loved the World Jamboree on Tuesday. Brought back a LOT of happy memories for DH and I, as we took a unit to Chile in 98. Funnily enough, our two at Scout camp for a week felt like more work than 26 Scouts to the other side of the world ever were.

It was very, very muddy at the start of the week (our car, like many others on site had to be dug out of mud), but the sun soon shone.

I was gutted to miss the Sunrise ceremony, but DD was still asleep, knackered after two very early starts and days off site. Still, we were all there for the celebrations.

Happy birthday (a tad belated...) to all Scouts and Guides on Mumsnet.
