Family tent recommendations

We're in the market for a new tent, for 2 adults and 2 children (aged 10 and 8). Would like something we can stand up in and with quite a large porch/living area.

I don't have any other requirements but do like the look of those blackout bedrooms, are the any good?

Would love to hear recommendations from experienced campers. We always have the car with us so size isn't an issue, would rather go big than small.

we borrowed this from a friend last time we went camping and it was great. very spacious and the extra porch space meant we could put bags/shoes etc there

We've just gone for a Coleman Oak Canyon with blackout bedrooms. I have to say I noticed a huge difference compared to our old tent. DS woke up at 6 as normal but we were thinking it could have been 4 so we counted that as a win!! DH is tall and can easily walk around in the living area. It's not light because it's got some steel poles and some fibreglass but so long as you've got your car it's not an issue. So far so good from us!

Coleman tents have blackout bedrooms, and I think Outdoor Revolution.

OlPro have a good rep: does that tent have mesh doors?

OP; I would say you need a 6 berth tent (minimum) sewn in groundsheet, a zipped mesh panel in ten bedroom pod doors, a mesh door option on the main doors. It can get very hot in s tent!

Also very good ventilation panels held open by a little Velcro support. If you don’t have enough ventilation you will get condensation.

It really is best if you can get to an independent retailer that has tents up and on display so that you can have a look.

We have a Kalahari 10 but it comes in smaller versions! We also have the porch.

Thanks, I'll look into those. Has anyone tried an air tent? My budget can stretch to it, just wondering if it's worth it

We haven't got an air tent but we love our Vango Marna 600xl it has bags of room for 3 plus a huge living area porch.

BrieAndChilli · 18/06/2019 08:11

We have the kalahari 8 man with a porch.
Perfect for us and 3 kids (plus my niece and nephew last time!)
Black out bedrooms make a huge difference and the porch also was a godsend on the day it rained so we could still make breakfast etc

We've just downsized to a Quechua Arpenaz Family 6.3 (secondhand, a few years old, still in near perfect condition). That's 3 bedrooms round a central living area, we found that style worked better for our family.

We now have 5 tents. It may be slightly excessive. There is 4 of us.

Thanks all

yes to an air tent! we've got a Berghaus air4 (there's 3of is) but they also come in a 6 and 8 man version

goes up really quickly - DH usually pitches ours while I unload the van

and because the air beams flex they're pretty sturdy in windy conditions - ours has survived a force 8 gale Shock

Jencottage · 20/06/2019 02:52

Whichever tent you choose, if you dont want to be up at 4 do try and get one with a blacked out sleeping part.

AltheaVestr1t · 21/06/2019 07:23

Yes to air tents! We have an Airgo Solus Horizon 6. It’s so easy to put up and down and a really good size. It also has a large porch.

Thanks for all the recommendations, we've ended up going with the Coleman air Valdes 6XL. 🤞🏻
