Can someone please explain to me about calor gas cylinders? Who owns them? Can you sell them? Can you give them away?

I have a calor gas cylinder that I was intending to sell as I don't need it anymore. It has been brought to my attention that I don't actually own the cylinder and that I cannot legally sell it. Is this right? I can't remember anyone ever telling my this when I paid for it. So, did I just pay to borrow it then? If I can't sell it, can I give it away for free? Or would that also be breaking some gas cylinder handling rule?

New one on me. You have paid for the gas, and a deposit on the cylinder, in effect, as refilling them is cheaper than "buying" new ones. Surely you can sell on that interest in the cylinder?!

Er, well I don't know all the legal ins and outs, but loads of people sell gas canisters they no longer need. We bought one from an Ebay seller and exchanged it for a full one at a Calor dealer with no problems (obviously we had to pay for the gas in the new cylinder). I think not so long ago you could return the unwanted cylinder and reclaim your deposit, but they don't seem to do that now.

from their website

I have an empty cylinder which I no longer need and do not have the cylinder refill agreement form; does that mean that I am unable to claim any available refund?

Unfortunately yes, although we are happy to take the Calor cylinder back and donate £5 to ChildLine as part of our cylinder retrieval scheme. Please note that the Calor cylinder needs to be returned by 31st December 2007.

and anything else that you want to know

Nemo2007 · 09/07/2007 23:04

oh its not a 907 or 904 is it?

schnapps · 09/07/2007 23:29

I don't know what that means Nemo. It's a 4.5kk butane calor gas cylinder.

Iota, I know it says that you can hand the cylinder back to calor gas and that I won't get a refund from them - is that basically saying that the cylinders can't be re-sold elsewhere legally?

are you anywhere near a mumsnetter in need of one?

Right, I spoke to someone at the shop where I bought the gas cylinder. They said that I can sell it, but I can't advertise or promote it. Anyway, sorted now! Thanks for all reponses
