Calling all OFF ROADERS and GREEN LANERS for a delicate toilet question.....

Can you help me settle an arguement here?

For any of you who have gone on one of those offroading holidays in your 4x4 (morocco, pyrenees, poland, etc etc) or actually anyone who is considering going on one or campers in general...

...if you were travelling over a day or two to get there and then camping during your tour, would you bring your own portable toilet? Assuming you would be camping in the wild, not on campsites, of course.

DH and I have been discussing this for far too long, to the extent that I dreamt about this last night, which is definitely not good! I need to be getting beauty sleep not dreaming about pooping in the woods!

And also, are there any eco-friendly potable toilets available on the market, that mean you don't need to leave chemicals in the mountains?

take a shovel.

Dig a hole.

Fill it in when you've finished.

Nothing simpler, takes up very little space, and no chemicals whatsoever.

sorry, should have specified that this is not for me, this is for our customers. To me, going in to 'the wilderness' means pooping in the woods, but DH thinks some people will get a bit 'uptight' about it, IYKWIM?

You could always offer the option of a portaloo. I don't know anything about them but you should ask on ukcampsites as someone on there is bound to know of an environmentally friendly one.

had an inevitable childish giggle at the name 'pooh powder'. When will I ever grow up! Doesn't help that DS is going through the 'giggling at poo/fart/bums' stage.

It made me smile too Ds has just learnt how to make fart sounds with his armpits so of course he is doing them ALL the time at the moment.

sorry, didn't realise this wasn't for you. I can imagine some people being a bit freaked by the idea of digging a hole before you sh*t!

DH is arguing for supplying a portaloo for the reasons you said, tissy, but I'm arguing for asking people to bring their own on our trips if they don't like 'taking a little walk in the woods'. better than using someone else's loo, which has potentially been used by dozens of people before you

question is how to phrase it without freaking people out!

I suppose it would depends on the types of people taking thses trips and how much other equipment they are to supply themselves. If they are bringing all their own camping equipment then a toilet facility could be on that list, if accomodation (tents) is provided then I would say a toilet facility should be provided too, even if it is a hole in the ground with a screen round it.

Also I would consider how many people would be traveling together and how much woodland there will be, if you have 12 people and one little bush nearby thats a lot of people wandering about with spades looking for a quiet spot, so thay might need a little toilet tent and one big hole or something like the Pett system.

Ahh right I understand now, didn't get the customer bit before. Have similar thoughts to Skribbles last 2 posts. Having looked at your website, to be honest yes I would expect somesort of sanitation to be provided. Ok I've never done 4x4 touring but am an outdoors sort of gal who's usually more than happy to pee behind a bush.

I suppse it depends on how many of you customers are experienced in that sort of travel and how many are giving it a try?

Could you maybe hire out something like the luggable loo (plus liners) or portapotty, maybe very lightweight toilet tent. I suppse it may not be the nicest job cleaning them after

Just had a look at your web site and it looks great, DH thinks it sounds like a fantastic holiday. DOn't know about the greenlaning thing I suppose it is more and english or thing or something, the term sounds funny to me as a Scot, we have plenty rural roads up here.

Greenlaning is also referred to as offroading. The only way to get to these remote spots is actually by 4x4 "off the road". Some tracks are goat tracks, and in one place we drive up a dry riverbed. DH is passionate about it, loves the adrenalin rush of challenging the car. Got to admit it's quite fun actually, and the best bit for me is getting there, sitting at the 'top of the world', having a nice cup of tea and a bbq!

We're actually about the add a 'gentle' option for less experienced green laners. And hopefully, a bigger new vehicle so we can drive people. fingers crossed.

And the great toilet debate continues in the burek household... I think we'll have an 'Executive Meeting on Portaloos' tonight and browse through those sites together. Oh, the life I lead

Ah I see, we wouldn't use the term green laneing up here, we just go off road. Green laning makes me think of mums roaring down back lanes in souped up 4X4s on the school run.

know what you mean - green laning makes it sound a bit too posh doesn't it!

the only mum roaring through lanes in a 4x4 over here is me and only because we need one to get to our house! I really get started at for being a woman driving a 4x4 here...
