Camping food - yum

I know this has been done time and time again but there's nothing quite like camping food.

My offer is pancetta pasta.

Boil spaghetti.

Thinly slice a large onion.
Gently fry.
Add cubed pancetta/lardons (smoked or unsmoked - your preference).
Fry.

Option 1 - bung in a tin of chopped tomatoes and some puree. - will need to leave a little longer to thicken.

Option 2 last minute bung in some creme fraiche or cream.

Drain pasta and throw it all together. It's delicious.

Even better if you're in afrabce because the lardons there are super fine and thinly sliced.

Question : has anyone done camping Calzones? The idea really appeals to me but not sure how to do it in a stove/BBQ...

*In France.

Just to be clear, Options 1 and 2 are separate dishes! One is creamy and the other is tomato-y

I prefer to use fire over a gas stove as much as possible when camping. And I found that getting a really good cold box meant that we could take much more stuff with us so my igloo has been a life saver.

You can't beat jacket spuds on a fire with home made coleslaw and chilli. My kids also love the costco pancake mix for breakfast every day. its a one part mix, one part water and is a delicious treat and doubles up as pudding. Add some strawberrys, chocolate syrup and mini mallows and its divine!

Never heard of camping calzones. Do you have a recipe?

Sittinonthefloor · 08/07/2018 21:33

I'm starting to thing that not using tinned tomatoes is good as although delish the washing up is grim! Now veering towards stuff cooked in foil to saving dishes and washing up! Stuffed pitta pockets wrapped in foil are yummy!

Crwban · 09/07/2018 16:49

Sittin do you cook them on BBQ?

Jilted Calzones are like a folded pizza. I'm
Hoping someone has given them a go. I don't have a campfire - only a BBQ and a strove. Would love some new recipes this year.

I’ve done them on a fire/embers.

We used the tomatoe and cheese flatbreads, another with tomatoe purée, oregano/basil, garlic, cheese and whatever else. Fold and wrap in foil. Place on embers and turn occasionally. Cooks quick as the flatbread is already cooked

Tinned chilli con carne and plastic cheese toasties

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/07/2018 20:58

Yeah I know they’re folded pizzas, just wondered how you cook them whilst camping Smile

Disclaimer - I last did this in a home etc classroom 30+ years ago...
But I do remember making pizza in a pan not an oven.

Make the base, dry fry one side until done. Turn over, add sauce, cheese and cooked toppings while pan still on the heat. Allow to cook base and cheese to melt. Voila - pizza!

Someone who has actually tried it cAmping may be better. I suspect tho that dry dry base, flip, put toppings on half the base while it starts to cook, fold in 2 and flip again when that half base is cooked to allow 2nd half of vase to cook is probably the basic concept.
