Has anyone taken their caravan abroad?

We’ve been touring now for the last five years and love it. So far we have stayed in the UK but I would love to branch out and go abroad, maybe starting off with somewhere like Holland and then France.
Has anyone done this with a tourer and kids? Is it easy or is it just more stress than it’s worth? Did it work out expensive?

We’ve camped abroad.

Factor in:

EHU converter - £5?
Breakdown cover & car insurance for Europe for car & caravan
Petrol costs and toll road costs
Stop half way
Food and drink prices
Required driving kit for Europe e.g. warning triangle
Holiday insurance
Satnav for Europe
Gas availability for Calorgas

Other than that it was really easy.

I need to research European towing laws - speed etc.

We've been aboard every year in ours since getting one 9 years ago. We love it.
The worst thing is getting to the port - we're in the north west so the driving down is the hard slog. Driving abroad is ready - roads are so much quieter. We tend to go dover to calais as other ferry crossings are extortionate with a caravan.
Shopping over isn't as easy to break up a journey as you can't really stay in a B&B easily, but you learn to set up the bare minimum.
Our children love it. They're good travellers which obviously helps, and car dvd players are a lifesaver.

We love exploring new places so have ventured around most of France and been to Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Belgium. Our first trip abroad was Belgium and Luxembourg - we did the hull zebrugge overnight crossing for that.

We had a caravan when I was a child and I loved it! We toured all round Denmark and Sweden in the summer holidays (ferry from Hull) and also France. But my favourites were the Scandinavian countries - campsites by lakes, beaches, Tollund man, Viking boat festivalls, original Legoland, elk ... fabulous! And the people are so friendly. Good luck!

We go to the Dordogne every year towing our caravan. We cross on the tunnel (costs approx £450 return) and then a campsite just outside Rouen for an over night (another 30 euro). Then we have another night just outside Le Mans. We are members of the Caravan club (less than £50 I think?) and get discounts on the crossing. If you google what you need to drive in France for example hi-viz overjackets for all the family, warning triangle, breathalysers (not sure if they're still required), car insurance docs, ownership paper. I might have missed the odd thing out here. Also I believe you need anti dazzle stickers on your car headlights - again Google is your friend! We use Calor Gas for our caravan. On the motorway there are service stations and if you follow the signs for Caravans not cars, there are places to pull up and get out and make a cuppa. Unfortunately they tend to be near the lorries so not the safest for kids.

Oh yes I love the aires (services). There's so many which are just somewhere to pull off - maybe a van to get a drink, but essentially a place to go for a wee and stretch legs. The space on these rather than the full services makes it easy to get things out and have a picnic.
