We've been badly burned by camper vans. We've had two in the last two years which have both blown the head gaskets, had new engines fitted, then blown up again. Really bad luck and very expensive.

This time DH wants to spend all the money buying a high top, LWB van which is mechanically sound and then converting it into a camper.

Tell me about your camper.

Has anyone done their own conversion?

I'm watching a couple on ebay and auto trader, but as usual DH is away so I'm having to make the decision on my own as I'm going to a festival with dd in a couple of weeks.

My dad did two conversions, we had bunk beds, a table that converted to a double bed, a toilet, a sink, cooker, fridge, loads of cupboard space. It was brilliant. He is a dab hand at carpentry and general diy though.

Excellent Kbear. We'll need bunks as there are six of us.
What vehicles did he use?
We're thinking of high top, LWB transit atm. We really need to get a car which won't blow up because we need to heal the pain of the last two cruel disasters.

The first was a Bedford ex-ambulance (this was in the 70's BTW!!) the second was a bread van originally but I'm not sure of the make. It was designed by my mum - he built it how she wanted it and it was fabulous. My happiest memories where of going to school knowing mum was packing the van and we would head off into the night!
