Campsite an hour or so from Santander?

Thinking about getting the ferry to Santander and either doing a EuroCamp type thing or a proper campsite if nothing like that.

I’m sure there used to be loads of Eurocamps in Northern Spain but website now apparently says not.

Any suggestions?

I found one! I searched for Earocamp Santander and is called Playa Joyel.

Hope that helps 😀

Kahlua4me · 16/01/2018 21:18

eurocamp even!

Thank you! I actually searched again after that third post and found it myself. Bloody idiot I am.

We stayed there 17 years ago. The beach directly accessed from the campsite was huge.

Santilliana Del Mar was lovely. The market at Castro Urdiales was good.

Obviously it could have all changed by now!

We looked at doing that bit friends who know Spain advised against it. Apparently that side of Spain is nowhere near as nice as the other coast so you end up driving a fair distance to get to a good place.

Love Playa Joyel, love Noja. Been there lots with small children. The beach is fabulous.

Nice short drive from Santander too.

We stayed in this one about 6 years ago, one of our favourite campsites and the DC's all talk about going back on day even though they are big. Not sure about how far it is from Santander, we came in via Bilbao then 'drove home'!

Campsite by lake near Estella

That side of Spain is absolutely stunning as well, not your usual tourist destination but really beautiful and rugged, mountains and lakes as well as the coast. Would go back again in a heartbeat. We were the only English speakers we met the whole time we were there as well.

Some images to whet your appetite:

Santilliana Del Mar
Castro Urdiales
Picos De Europa
Noja

All accessible from Playa Joyel campsite assuming you have a car

That looks absolutely beautiful gnome. I went surfing in that area as a teen but can’t remember exactly where. I’ve always wanted to go back but never got round to it. Excited now!

MrsAndyDayTheFirst · 17/01/2018 10:03

Oops, forgotten I’d namechanged.

It was one of our stand out destinations when DCs were small. We stayed there as part of a three week early season road trip.

We drove down the west coast of France. Stayed in Playa Joyel for a week, drove across Spain to the Costa Brava for a week, drove round to the Alps for a week, then home.

It is the Atlantic coast which stays in the mind the most. Relative to everywhere else it was so under developed. Driving in the countryside there were farmers still using horse and cart. The big sites werent as packed as other places.
