We were camping last week and watched a family of 4 pack up their tent and belongings and drive off on a Nissan Micra, the model with the bug eyes. Now there's packing light but I don't think I could ever manage that! Is it just me who seems to pack everything we might possibly need?

Wow.
I completely pack out a seven seater 😲

We managed a four night stay with our little 208 Peugeot.. two kids, two adults.. I could hardly see the kids in the back seat for the duvets. DD 1 held the camping kettle the whole way .. just no where else to slot it in!😂
Kudos to that family!

We fill a ford galaxy plus roof box for a 2 night camping weekend. Travelling light has never been something that came easy.....

we observed a french family packing everything, including 2 dc into an old citroen "deux chevaux". no roofbox.
admittedly their tent wasn't big, just a 4 person igloo tent, but still...

I moved out of my mums house and 500 miles south with everything I own in a Fiat 500 ... you can squeeze a lot in if you use the little places

I took exh, 6 dc and all camping equipment and food for weeks to France in a Nissan Serena years ago.

I saw a Chinese family a couple of years ago with 2 dc and all the camping gear and a pram in a Nissan micra, they were doing a tour of England for 3 weeks. I was totally amazed!

You just have to adjust your mindset, when we camp on our bikes we carry everything on our racks.

Our weekend camping kit looks like this (plus tent, bags and pads). Everything we need is in that box, incl bog in a bag Grin, three little tables, three candle lanterns plus two battery lanterns, plates, bowls, trangia, utensils, cups, sit mats and three folding chairs, two coffee makers because DH likes expresso and I prefer a cafetière (very important), etc., etc.. We can fit three, plus everything in a two door, four seater hatchback.

Then we have the other extreme - a very full car, and, if we take the dog, bikes and the canoe we take a trailer.

Different camping styles = great excuse for buying gear (at least DH sees it that way).

Fortunately we like the simple life everyone, don't do things like camping furniture etc. We can camp quite happily with that box and have our tent pitched and set up within 10 mins.

But, our other extreme is this .... when you do things you need gear, cycling, canoeing, anything outdoorsy = clothes for every eventuality in the North. We don't have anything in the car at all other than people/dog when we take the trailer which contains two bikes, life jackets and anything else that might be needed.
